Elevated essentials: a print layering tee

Susan B. wears a block print layering tee and dark wash jeans. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

A layering tee is one of my wardrobe essentials. The best ones are lightweight, not bulky, and fitted enough to slide easily underneath a sweater or jacket, without being too clingy to wear alone.

It’s easy enough to find options in solid colors, but a print adds some nice visual interest. I really like this block print tee! Enough so that I don’t mind “cheating” on my color palette just a little bit. 😉 (And I can always add a lighter jacket in my Spring palette.) It’s a little long for me so I’ve turned up the bottom underneath, and will get it hemmed to this length. I’m wearing a size 0 (4/6) and it’s perfect otherwise.

You could easily dress up this tee for a casual holiday look with some sparkly jewelry. Swap out the jeans for some drapey trousers, add fun flats, and you’re good to go!

Today only: Chico’s is having a One Day Sale…get one of their bateau neck sweaters for $29 with the purchase of a quilted jacket for $79!

I also wanted to mention that there’s a new round of Faster Way to Fat Loss starting up on Monday. I know it seems like a weird time to start up a nutrition and fitness program, right before the holidays. But the plan is flexible enough that you can still enjoy special holiday meals, and you’ll get a huge jump on 2021! The rest of this year is going to go by regardless, why not use this time to increase your energy and strength, and improve your outlook?

  1. I have a few that are not solid. I love prints like this one and the new leopard or camo with color appeal to me. I lean on my stripes most though because there’s my color palette right there. My orange/beige stripe tells me to put on beige pants, my brown boots and go.

  2. I love printed tees, and that’s a terrific one! You look maaahvelous. Also, the Chico’s jacket comes in some tempting animal prints as well as the solids you linked.

  3. Live the tee…I think prints are great, on me they hide a multitude of sins lol. I’m curious, is your necklace from Greece? I had one years ago my in-laws brought back from a vacation there. Sure wish I still had it!

  4. Susan, I have followed your blog for years; it is one of my favorites. I particularly appreciate your poimt of view since I live in Arizona, and the parameters your work with based on climate are similar to mine. (I do miss the switch to fall/winter choices that worked in the Midwest). I love this top on you and find it so flattering. It does add a touch of sophistication. In fact, you are striking in it. Your color consultation was enthralling and I follow the firm you used on social media. Fascinating and I hope some day to have a live consultation. That being said, I miss the elegance of black you included in your wardrobe. I think more saturated colors would work better now with the changes you have made to your hair color? I respect the dignity of choice to which you are entitled, and hope not to offend. But there, I have said it! Thank you for serving a former devotee of a fashion press that no longer serves Women of a Certain Age,

    1. Thanks so much, Clarissa! I think as long as I avoid solid black near my face, I can incorporate it in small doses (as with the background of this print).

  5. Hi Susan, I’m interested in the Chico jeans but have a question. What is the difference between the “short” and the “petite.” Since we are the same height which did you purchase?
    Thanks!
    PS LOVE the hair!

    1. Thanks, Lisa! It looks like the Short inseam is 29″ and the Petite is 28″. I go with Petite sizes when available.

  6. HI there Susan:
This was such a helpful post. I also struggle with “what to wear” under blazers, etc. Do you have a post on good solid layering pieces in basic colors as well. Thanks!!

  7. Hello, Susan, the top may be a little dark for your official palette, but I really like the way it seems to bring out the lowlights in your hair. Perhaps because of the warm colors in the print, It absolutely works on you, especially paired with the sunglasses. Enjoy your blog and thank you for sharing your color evolution.
