Inspired by nature, I’m in the mood for green

Elm tree with new spring leaves, blue sky.

Green has always been my favorite color, and especially that new-leaf, spring green that heralds longer, warmer days ahead. (Above: our elm tree was completely bare when I left for London; I returned to this gorgeous display just two weeks later!)

A smart casual outfit with a faux suede moto jacket

It’s not always easy to find green to wear though, other than olive/khaki which seems to have established itself as a go-to neutral. But I’ve had better luck this season!

While I was in London, the lovely people at Kettlewell Colours kindly sent over this “Rachel” faux suede moto jacket in Leaf (gifted) for me to try. I’m wearing Medium. It’s a great little lightweight jacket, perfect for travel and transitional season wear. It’s available in a bunch of colors, and is machine washable!

If you’re curious about seasonal color palettes, Kettlewell has some great info on their blogs. And if you know your season, you can filter all of the items to show just your colors or even find items in a specific color.

I’m officially a Senior Citizen…yes, I turn 65 today! 🎂 I’ve never had a problem sharing my age, as I consider every year a victory. 😆

I’ve been trying to ease out of wearing jeans daily (though they’ll always have a place in my wardrobe). I purchased these bright navy Theory wool trousers last year, but haven’t worn them much. They are a great fit (I’m wearing size 6) and quite comfortable, and I’ll be working them into rotation more often. (And I’ll definitely be including them in my next travel wardrobe.)

What’s your favorite jacket style?

  2. Happy birthday! You look fabulous in green!!! I just got the green coatigan you featured a few weeks ago (50 percent off-Ann Taylor). I think it will look pretty for cool March days. I enjoy having a seasonal wardrobes, because it feels like I have new clothes as seasons change-lol. I love red from December until the end of February but after that I don’t wear it except to accent with navy. The same goes for rusts and golds and some oranges, I don’t care to wear them once Thanksgiving is over. I remember my Mother always changed to lighter weight/pastel bedspreads when Spring came and we were always excited because it felt new to us. I loved your post yesterday? but didn’t comment. It gave me a lot to think about. I think trusting our instincts and leaning on the wisdom that comes with age is as important when it comes to clothes as in any other aspect of life. Have a fabulous day an eat something yummy!!!

  3. Happy Birthday – I do hope you are able to spend the day with loved ones, celebrating your milestone birthday.

  4. Happy Birthday, Susan! Gorgeous green jacket; looks fantastic on you. Thanks for sharing your travels!

  5. Happy Birthday! I am a new reader to your blog and am loving all the fabulous ideas you post! I am also a spring Gamine and have been reluctant to try certain colors. Thanks for your photos and links! I have been able to find items to push me into a new wardrobe.

    1. Happy Birthday! Hope you have a fabulous day…here’s to the next 30 years! ‍♀️

Thank you for a wonderful fashion blog….your choices always make so much sense…the perfect balance of wearable and trendy. Love the travel wardrobes, your posts from your overseas trips, your sharing thoughts on life in general.
Your thoughts the other day about Ukraine said what so many of us feel. Let’s all pray and work for peace.

  6. Happy Birthday, Susan! That green jacket would look great with DENIM!!! (It will always have a place in my wardrobe, too.)

  7. Happy birthday! 65 began one of the best periods of my liife.
Lots of very interesting posts since your Red Fox training. You are energized!
I love green too. It’s amazing how many different shades there are. I like olive green and some of the blue/green shades. Heck, I like almost all greens! You can find so many shades in nature; it’s mindboggling.

  8. Happy Birthday Susan. You look lovely in the green Rachel jacket. Its one of my favorites from Kettlewell. If you are looking for green check on J Jill right now. They have a really pretty Pea Green cardigan and striped tee. Also a nice green cropped casual jacket. Like you I love jeans but sometimes want to look more polished.. My solution has been colored jeans. I shop around to find the neutrals in my warm palette and I’ve managed to find some great colors.

  9. A very Happy Birthday to you. Welcome to the group, I am 66 and don’t know what that is supposed to feel like, so I tend to forget ( until I look in the mirror). How wonderful to have that gorgeous jacket sent to you. You look beautiful in it, and such a nice change for spring. I was amazed at your elm tree, since we are still under much snow, and more coming, so you sent me a bit of hope that winter will be over in a few weeks (?) maybe. I bet you are still absorbing all that you learned and enjoying the results of the more indepth training. Have a wonderful day.

  10. Happy Birthday! I am proud of my age too, just turned 68 last week. I love the green jacket. It looks great with the navy pants. I am so glad you are moving away from jeans! I will be meeting my daughter in Paris on May 1. My wardrobe is navy and a shade of orange. I am missing a jacket but the one you are wearing might just hit the mark for May in France.

  11. Happy birthday! I hope you’re getting some sunshine down there on you big day (rainy and cool here in NorCal).

  12. Happy Birtday Susan! I love the green jacket and like seeing a change in your color pallet. It helps signify Spring is on the way.
My yoga instructor last night was talking about Forest Bathing. Lots of health benefits; your green makes me want to get out there and soak in some of the beneficial elements that trees put out.

  13. Happy birthday and welcome to the world of the senior discount! Here’s to a wonderful year ahead for you, filled with new adventures both at home and abroad. And hopefully one which sees peace in Ukraine.

  14. Happy Birthday Susan! My milestone B-day is coming up in 2 weeks-can’t believe it. Your spring green moto jacket looks spectacular on you. I am a color analyst as well and since I ‘m a Spring that color is in my palette. I love it paired with navy and with white. May the year to come be full of love and joy!

  15. Hello Susan
    Thank you for your inspiration.
Could you suggest a jacket similar to that green one ?
    Thank you

  16. Happy birthday! Yipes, easing out of wearing jeans every day??? That’s one of the things I’ve loved about your blog — the polished looks WITH jeans. My lifelong fashion statement, if you will, has been, “everything goes with jeans”. Please keep those jeans looks coming!

  17. Have a wonderful birthday!!! You are a great advertisement for Medicare! ❤️❤️❤️
PS: please don’t forget about jeans entirely. It’s my favorite part of fashion. Wearing jeans and being put together. Love your blog!!!!

  18. Happy birthday! Have loved your blog for years. I’ll add another voice in favor of jeans. As a fellow Californian, I admire how you bridge the gap between casual, stylish, clever and put together style. Jeans are a big part of that. The person who commented about your travel wardrobe being inappropriate for London has clearly never taken a look at the women who run Red Leopard. Color is a beautiful thing. 19. Happy Birthday! I’m just a few weeks older than you. In my head, I’m much younger! I’m grateful to be healthy & living comfortably, but admit I’m struggling a bit with the bodily changes. Hate to complain, though, since I realize how fortunate I am. Especially these days.

  20. Happy Birthday, Susan!!! Here’s my take on the topic of jeans. Obviously, you love jeans and you look good in them so continue to wear them as often as you wish. I love the green jacket paired with the navy blue pants and striped tee on you. I enjoyed your recent blog on the regional differences in clothing styles. I think our clothing choices should reflect what makes us feel good.

  21. Happy Birthday Susan! You’ve been one of my ‘chic role models’ for a very long time (I’ve been reading your blog since 2006/7). I am 3 years behind you in age and you inspire me with each blog post. Thank you!

  22. Happy Birthday, Susan! Thank you for your sharing your creativity, insight, and joie de vivre with us. Reading your blog never fails to add a little bit of pleasure to my day. Have a wonderful year!

  23. I am “green” with envy! That jacket is gorgeous and looks lovely on you as well. Happy Birthday, Susan. Have a wonderfully happy and healthy year.

  24. Happy Birthday. I love this outfit, and the pants are much smarter than jeans,,having said that I travel alot and depending on where and what I take a pair or jeans…dark wash only, because they look better

  25. Happy Birthday, Susan! I had to reply in support of those replied in favor of jeans. Living in Norcal, specifically the SF Bay Area, I wear jeans regularly and love them. They really are part of a typical “uniform” here. I agree with your previous comments about regional attire and try to alter my travel wardrobe based on the destination. I started following your blog years ago before you sprung into color. But I continue to enjoy your gamine and casual style. Thank you for your blog! Cheers!

  26. Imagine that, that splendid jacket was gifted. You lucky so and so. It is brilliant for you. The brand chose this item well.
Love the blue trousers too. Theory is such a good brand.

  27. Happy belated birthday, Susan! Love you in the navy and Kelly green – one of my all time favorite color combinations (since grade school). It looks smashing on you! Hope you have a fabulous special day. Have not seen your earlier blog but know we are all praying for peace in the Ukraine.

  28. Belated happy birthday! I was wondering if Kettlewell was affiliated with Red Leopard, because their color consult looks similar. Do they have physical stores in London? I subscribe to their emails, but I was wondering if I could go and see their stuff in person.

    1. Hi Christine, they’re not affiliated in any official sense, but are friends and do use the same color analysis system. I believe their business is online only, and there is no physical store.
