Friday Favorites: What I Love This Week…

The best kind of sale…

You know how I love a “% off everything” sale, and there are some good ones on right now! These sales include new-for-spring merch, so if there’s anything you’ve had your eye on, it’s a good time to circle back.

Madewell

Madewell is having an “Insiders Event,” with 25% off everything! To be an “insider,” all you have to do is sign up to access the discounts. If you’re in need of a new pair of jeans…

Even though these have “90’s” in the name, I think this classic straight leg style is timeless. In Standard, Plus, Petite, Tall and Taller(!) sizes.

I have these pants in brown, and have been eyeing this navy pair. They’re a nice break from denim, but just as easy to style. Other colors available too, in Standard, Petite and Tall sizes.

The gently squared toe gives these ballet flats a modern edge. The woven leather is nice for adding some texture, but they’re also available in smooth leathers.

Cool coverage: a breezy linen top with pretty eyelet details. Wear as a blouse, or open as a lightweight topper over a tee or tank.

These “molten” huggie hoops are in my cart right now. Also available in silver.

And this crossbody sling bag is another updated take on a 90’s style. I like that in addition to the main compartment, there’s a zippered pocket on the side for small items like keys or lipstick. Also available in black, ivory, and woven tan leather.

But that’s just a small sampling. Go check out the sale, and be sure to sign up for the Insiders’ 25% off.

Everlane

If you haven’t checked out Everlane lately, it’s time for another look. They’ve been adding some stylish options to their “normcore” basics and are currently having a Friends & Family event, with 20% off.

This organic cotton cardigan is available in several neutral shades, and this bold green. (I haven’t seen this one in person yet. In most of the images it looks like a warm Spring green, but in others looks like more of a Winter emerald. I’ll report back if I see one “in the wild.”) Sizes XXS-XXL. I find most Everlane styles run large, so would probably suggest sizing down.

I think fisherman sandals are a great warm weather option for those who prefer a bit more toe coverage. And I’ve found Everlane shoes to deliver great quality for the price. These are also available in black and a soft white.

Springs and Autumns take note! If you’ve been looking for a creamy, warmer-toned alternative to a white shirt, here you go! This relaxed linen shirt is available in sizes 00-16. Yes, it’s also available in white, and several other colors.

Special delivery from France

I’m a bit behind in sharing this, but wanted you to see what’s in the latest My French Country Home Box (which I often refer to as my “French fix”).

My French Country Home Box for Feb 2024 - Home essentials
My French Country Home Box for Feb 2024 - Home essentials

The theme of this gift box was “Parisian Home Essentials,” and included a beautiful coffee table book, “Extraordinary Collections,” by Marin Montagut. If hunting through vintage shops and les marchés aux puces is your thing, you’ll find this book a special treat.

Other lovely French gifts in this box (hand selected by Sharon Santoni) include

  • a lovely floral glass tumbler (I’ll be putting mine to use as a vase for small arrangements.)
  • delicate taper candles and gold holders from Maison Pechavy
  • delicately scented liquid hand soap from Bienamé
  • an antique silver serving set for small desserts
  • a hand-painted gift card featuring our favorite iconic green Paris park chairs
  • floral scented palettes for drawers or to hang in closets

I can’t wait to see what Sharon has planned for the May box. These boxes make lovely gifts for Mothers’ Day, housewarmings, birthdays, or other special occasions. If there’s someone you know who loves all things French, it’s a perfect gift!

I’ve been watching

agathe Koltes: Murder in Brittany

In between episodes of “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans” and “The New Look,” I’ve been casting about for another series to pick up. I’ve watched the first two episodes of “Agathe Koltes: Murder in Brittany” and will probably keep going with it.

Phillippine Leroy-Beaulieu stars as a seasoned cop (a very different character from the glamorous and demanding boss from “Emily in Paris”), who moves to Brittany. Murder and family dramas ensue. There’s only one season though, so it’s not a huge commitment. It’s on Amazon Prime (with a PBS Masterpiece subscription).

Have you been watching anything interesting lately?

  1. Have you watched Monsieur Spade on Acorn? The famous PI Sam Spade is in the south of France. It is SO good! Only one season so far, fingers crossed for more.

    1. I started it, and really liked it, but haven’t decided if I’m ready to do another subscription. 😉

  2. Susan, your description of the gently squared toe of the ballet flats made me laugh and brought back memories from 1962 when I was a young girl living in France. For my first pair of “grownup” shoes, I had saved my babysitting money until I had enough to buy a pair of white slingback flats in our small village. I was assured that the “platypus toe” was the epitome of contemporary style. I’m delighted that it is now modern again!

  3. Another vote for “Monsieur Spade” (on AMC). I’ve also really enjoyed “Masters of the Air” on Apple TV+. (The series ends with the latest episode released today and I’m kind of dreading finding out who survived since the main characters are based on real U.S. servicemen.) My uncle flew in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII and was shot down and killed over France in 1944, so the story is particularly meaningful to me. The young cast is terrific and the Irish actor who serves as the series narrator (portraying an American navigator) plays John Wilkes Booth in the latest Apple TV+ release, “Manhunt.” Looking forward to that too. I love Phillippine Leroy-Beaulieu; she was also in “Call My Agent,” another terrific show I learned about from you, Susan. I’ll have to see if I can locate this “Agathe Koltès” series.

  4. Susan, I have become interested in scarves again, too. The last couple of weeks I’ve seen several women wearing silk neck scarves, and a couple of women who used scarves to tie their hair into a ponytail. Those women really caught my eye. Your featured outfit is just how I want to dress, simple, classic, but with a little edge.

  5. Great things. Thanks for the capsule. It inspired me to use my chartreuse cross body bag with a blue and white striped shirt. Still need to figure out the rest LOL.

  6. Those little French gift boxes look both chic and practical. Just finished Capote vs The Swans and now The New Look. I am enjoying the scenes with Coco Chanel perhaps more than Christian Dior – and where is the fashion? The Balenciaga series (I thought) was better. Masters of the Air is very good (first couple of episodes a bit slow). Just binge watched a Russian (but set in Ukraine) a corny series called Love in Chains, but can’t find Season 3. The Gentlemen (on Netflix) is a 6 part series (based on a movie). Quite hilarious.

  7. What a lovely collection of recommendations and ideas to ponder over. Have a lovely weekend Susan.
    Best wishes,
    Julie xx
