Jeans and a tee, but make it an outfit ✨

Living near the coast in California, I’ve come to expect fickle weather this time of year. Days can swing from cool and dreary to clear and warm and back again within hours. So lightweight jackets I can throw on over my tee shirts and jeans are among my most sought after wardrobe items. Finding jackets that hit the sweet spot between casual and polished can be a challenge.

I mentioned this jacket on Monday, and wanted to show it to you in an outfit. This bright navy color is a versatile neutral in my wardrobe, but I would have loved it in an ivory or camel color too (no such luck this season). I’m wearing a regular Small in the jacket. (Tee: Small, jeans: 27)

Accessorizing a jeans and tee shirt outfit…

During the summer, jeans and a tee shirt is my default setting. I love the Everlane box-cut tees, as they’re one of the few “regular” sized tees that aren’t too long on me. 😆 The fabric is organic cotton, and lightweight but still substantial. They’re a budget-friendly option (and you can save more if you purchase 3.)

Even if I’m not going anywhere special, I like to add a few simple accessories to feel more “dressed.” These little Madewell bandanas have become another summer staple. They come in a bazillion colors/prints, and not only add some color near my face, but keep the chill off my neck when the ocean breezes pick up. The cabuchons on the bracelet echo the color of the scarf.

Live on Instagram…

And next Tuesday, the 15th, I have a very special LIVE planned…I’ll be chatting with Manina and Rachel from Red Leopard about color, hair color/going grey, and style! You won’t want to miss this one! Join us at 11am PT / 2pm ET / 7pm UK.

  1. Susan you look great. Just wondering about sizing on the box-cut tees and the jacket. Did you need to size down on the tees and is your jacket petite or regular? Thank you.

    1. Hi Rose, thanks! I’m wearing a Small in the box cut tee, and a regular Small in the jacket.

  2. Super cute outfit. Unfortunately here in the East we are well into summer and the last thing I’d want to wear right now is jeans and a jacket. I’ll have to save this look for fall.

  3. Quite a bit of June Gloom this year in San Jose. And…we were in Paso last weekend and it was cool and really windy! Your outfit is perfect for these temps…I’ll be closet-shopping for something similar to wear today.

By the way, your hair looks great! I’m also wearing a longish-short layered style and loving how easy it is, and also liking the feel of having some hair on my head (with my fine hair, a must).

  4. Love the outfit! The mild weather we are getting here in Mississippi is unseasonably cool this year which scares me for deep summer; I see us having many over 100 degree days. Having said that, I only need a jacket when visiting one of my doctors. No jeans here, linen & linen blend outfits that are cooler than the thick denim fabric. Keep up the good work & I’m looking forward to the live event next week!!

  5. I copied this look because although it’s way too hot on the coast now, I will do it later come fall. That is the perfect jacket. I just hope it hangs well. Sometimes the lightweight jackets hike in the back instead of hanging straight down. That’s the problem with buying online. You just can’t tell until you try it on. Fabulous casual look. The scarf adds so much.

  6. Susan what color are the snaps and zipper on the jacket? If silver tone, I was wondering if that shade of blue would work for a winter?

    1. Hi Rae, the snaps and zipper are what I’d call “dark pewter.” They are cool enough that they wouldn’t fight with silver jewelry. I do think this shade would work for a Winter, as there’s some vibrance to it.

  7. Susan: so much fun planned! I’m wondering a few things: do you take your normal size with Vince’s shoes? I like the look of the sandals but am not sure if I should size up a half size or not. Also: I’m busy Friday but I’m wondering if you’ll be recording your makeup discussion—will it be posted on IG? And last, I have my appointment with Annie Castano on the 15th but am hoping you’ll be recording the Red Leopard gals discussion! Thank you for these wonderful discussions! I always find them so helpful and fun. (BTW I’m the one on IG with the funny name of Sybes14)

    1. Hi Sally, yes, I’ll post it here afterward. It will also be posted to my Instagram under IGTV. (And I did know that was you, just wasn’t sure whether you wanted me to use your real name or not. 😉 )

I’m usually a size 7 in Vince shoes and sandals, and that’s what I’m wearing here.

  8. Love this jacket! I’ve been looking at it for a while, and almost purchased it yesterday but was worried it was too dark. Seeing you wearing it (as opposed to how it looks on the Nordstrom site) encouraged me to buy it. Would you say it’s not really as dark blue as it looks on the Nordstrom site? So cute on you!

    1. Hi Phyllis, thanks! I’d say it’s a little lighter and brighter than it looks on the Nordstrom site.

      1. Thanks! I’m going to order it and take a chance. With Nordstrom’s easy return policy, I’m not worried, and fingers crossed I will want to keep it!

  9. I loved the jacket on Monday and I still love it today! Unfortunately, I couldn’t find it on Nordstrom’s Canadian site. Oh well, I really don’t need another jacket. I have so many already! My most recent purchase is an olive green utility jacket that is getting lots of wear.

  10. I love this outfit. I live on coast of Maine and it would be perfect. Besides agreeing with other comments, I love how you add unexpected colors. On another note, I was telling a friend about your lengthy make up video with Brian. I can’t find it anywhere. I wanted to watch it again. It was so informative! Is it still available?
Thank you for all the work you do on your site; I am enjoying the evolution of it.

  11. Hi Suan!
On one of your Instagram lives you were wearing a blue and white striped top with lemons, where did you get that top? I thought it was so fun and cute!!

  12. Susan … at Miss Lorraine’s did you do a photo sheet?.. I really think I remember you.. ( a scarf maybe around your head..?)

I am above San Francisco.. we are having odd weather
    I hope you contact me..
    Trisha

    1. Hi Trisha, I don’t think that was me, as I don’t recall ever having my photo taken there. (I only did the few modeling classes, wasn’t there much otherwise.)

  13. This is a fantastic look, Susan! Every single bit of it works together. Love the unexpected -to-me color on the jauntily tied scarf, and the t shirt and jacket combo really works. That jacket has the feel of a classic d mom jacket ,(which I adore), but more draper and a step up stylewise. Brava all around!
