Sifting Through The Labor Day Sales (With An Eye Toward Fall)
The Labor Day sales can be a great opportunity to pick up some fall wardrobe refreshers at reduced prices. I’ve been doing a little online reconnaissance, and wanted to share some of my sale picks.
Fall Styles On Sale
Though the official start of fall is still a few weeks off, my brain usually starts to shift seasonal gears around Labor Day. Shopping ahead of the season can be a smart choice for best selections and to take advantage of holiday weekend promotions.
I love “x % off site wide” promotions, as they’re a great opportunity to save on new and updated pieces can wear for the season ahead.
J.Crew
You can save 40% off your purchase from a large selection of new-for-fall styles with code HELLOFALL. The sweater-blazer I featured HERE is included, but if you prefer something with a front closure, this “cocoon sweater-blazer” might be more your speed. There are a few neutral shades, but if you’re looking for an unexpected color pop, the “dried violet” above could work for cooler palettes. Sizes XX-Small to 3X.
For a more relaxed look, this ribbed cotton-cashmere cardigan is offered in multiple colors, sizes XX-Small to 3X.
And these Vintage Slim Straight Cords have been added to the promotion! (See mine in Pale Mocha here.)
This silk twill shirt in a dot print has dress-up/dress-down potential. Sizes 00-24.
I’ve had plaid pants on my wish list for a few seasons now. This pair in English wool is a pull-on style, a nice marriage of structured and relaxed. Sizes 00-16.
Talbot’s
Save 25% off your regular price purchase, and an additional 70% off all markdowns! This multi-colored stripe tee is a nice layering piece, available in Misses, Petite, Plus and Plus Petite sizes.
I just received this little jacket in the Goldfinch color (shown above) and really like it! It’s not bulky, and light enough for transitional season wear. Other colors available in Misses, Petite, Plus, and Plus Petite. Runs TTS. If you want to layer over a thicker sweater, you may want to size up.
Aquatalia
Save 25% off SITEWIDE with code LDW25. I’m a big fan of Aquatalia for comfortable, well-made, weatherproof footwear. I love the piping detail on these block heel booties! I’ve been looking for an updated weatherproof pair for travel and just ordered the Midnight Brown color to try.
I’ve been seeing a lot of burgundy/Bordeaux shoes and bags this season, which is another option if you’re wanting to branch out from black. These croc-embossed loafers are good-looking and also weatherproof.
Jenni Kayne
If you’ve been eyeing anything from Jenni Kayne, this weekend get 20% off with code FRESHSTART. The cotton fisherman sweater I’m wearing here is included!
Banana Republic
Banana Republic has up to 50% off select styles, plus another 20% off for BR/Gap cardholders. I thought some of you might like this pleated midi skirt.
This striped canvas tote is the kind of thing you can carry now and into fall.
Paige
Save 20% sitewide with code LABORDAY2021. I happened to spot this abstract floral print sweatshirt at a local department store, and it’s much better in person than it looks online. It’s soft, not bulky, and seems to run TTS. I have on order, will report back.
Brian + MW
Save 30% on all eyeshadows, lipsticks, and mineral powders, PLUS get one of my favorite treatment products as a special gift when you spend over $200!

Fun stuff today, but the Banana R. site is not working, and although I love the sweatshirt, there is no way I could pay $285 plus duties for it. I will have to search for a similar look elsewhere. This gives great ideas to work from.
Hi Diane, ah, you must be in Canada? Yes, BR has a separate Canadian site here, https://bit.ly/2WRA2Gu so my usual links don’t work. And a shame the sweatshirt is so much more expensive there than here.
Susan, I don’t live in Canada but am having the same problem with many of the links not opening. It seems to have happened on your last 3 blog postings.I use an iPad to read them. I use your blog postings as a shopping guide so I am hoping it can be fixed.
Hi Kay, thanks for letting me know. If you’re having an issue on the ipad but not other devices, it may be an ad blocker that’s preventing the links from opening.
I love how you have really embraced your new colours. For instance the goldfinch jacket and the dotted silk blouse will be great on you. Can’t wait to see your pics wearing them.
Hi Susan,
I love these items for fall! Of course, I have warm coloring too so the fall is when I can find my colors (warm autumn according to the system that I use).
I would pair the dotted blouse with the plaid pants in a heartbeat. I am really into mixing prints right now.
I know you have a navy blue print blouse with tigers on it? That would rock with the printed snap front jacket in Goldfinch.
I wonder how that same blouse would go with the plaid pants or animal skirt that you show here.
Thanks for the inspiration!
Maggie
FYI – I forgot to ask you if you had ever considered a nice set of jogger pants to add to your collection of bottoms?
I have 2 pairs, one in olive green and another in tan, and I wear them when jeans are a little too heavy/warm.
I have one navy pair, but don’t find myself reaching for them often. I’m keeping my eyes open for something in camel or brown.
Same here. There are are so many navy, black and grey but few in camel or brown. Well, I did find dark brown but it was almost black and I really want a golden brown.
I will keep my eyes open. My olive joggers are from Goodwill and my grayish pair is from Aerie – this is the intimates/loungewear line of American Eagle. (I received them as a present two years ago and I could do with a smaller size but they are so soft.) I have been meaning to try AnyBody Cozy Knit Luxe Pants from QVC. They come in different inseams and I like a longer inseam because I don’t want to show ankle – I get cold. What I usually do with QVC and HSN is order one of each size and inseam that I might be in the range of colors I am interested in and and use the Easy Pay option. You still have to pay for shipping for each item but you get all of the options at one time. I make a choice and return the rest.
I remember that you bought a soft blouse a while ago. (It was the June 4, 2021 post “Style
Trying something new: The Big Sleeve.”) That might work with some softer pants such as joggers.
I saw some cropped sweater knit pants – almost gauchos – in a golden brown somewhere with a french terry sweatshirt to match on QVC or HSN. If I see it again, I will let you all know.
I also have one pair of jogger pants from Athleta in a heather gray. They were not cheap but they look the same as when I bought them over 5 years ago.
Good morning! On the Nordstrom site reviews of the Jenni Kayne sweater say the sleeves are too long to be functional. Has that been the case for you? I really enjoy your blog!
Hi Stefanie, I haven’t experienced that at all, and I’m petite. They hit just below my wrists, and I push or roll them up if needed.
I wonder what you are drinking in the photo where you are sitting on the concrete steps. It looks a bit like « biere rousse », and I thought maybe you are a fan of craft beer, but then I thought, no, Americans don’t drink (or not much). So maybe it’s some kind of red soda?
I can’t speak for the entire country, but here in California we are BIG fans of craft beers and there are probably hundreds of small breweries. I don’t remember specifically what this one was, but it was a local red ale. Cheers!
Great! I feel reassured that not all Americans are abstemious! I heard that in Washington if you order a glass of wine at lunch, they look at you as if you were a crazy drunkard.
I guess it depends on who you’re having lunch with 😉
Usually not a fan of corduroy though I’d make an exception for the green color because it’s not leaning towards olive or sage.
Susan I had my colors analyzed by Red Leopard several years ago. I am a paint box spring. What do you think about the heather walnut sweater jacket at J Crew for a spring? I’m on the fence.
Hi Kathy, the color is a very close match to the Chocolate in our palette. It definitely coordinates well with the other Spring colors in my wardrobe. If the rest of your wardrobe is very light and bright, you might find it a bit dark (or not). The Heather Khaki is also a very nice Spring neutral, noticeably warmer than the prior version of that color.
