My daily 5 minute makeup

Susan B shares her 5 minute makeup routine for a daily natural look. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

When it comes to makeup, I tend to subscribe to a “less is more” philosophy. I mean, I do love makeup, playing with it and trying new things. But most of the time, I think I’m best suited to a more natural look.

Just as the French “le no makeup look” doesn’t mean eschewing makeup completely, neither does my version of “natural.” It just means a selective application, focusing on enhancing my features.

Most days, this is my “bare minimum” makeup. Some days I’ll do more with the eyes (and will share in future videos). This application also works well if you’ll be out and wearing a mask. (Links to all products shown below the video 👇 )

  1. Loved your video! You made me laugh out loud! My makeup routine has been pretty quick and simple these days. I put eyeliner on the other day and it was like I’d never applied makeup before! I’ll have to work on my technique all over again! Happy thanksgiving!

  2. LOVED the video. When I first read your recommendation Les Beiges I couldn’t quite understand how you applied it (obviously I’m not too make up savvy) so thank you for the demonstration! Also I noticed that the color geranium is not available right now at Nordy’s. I hope the color isn’t discontinued because I love it. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

    1. Thanks, Beverly. If you can’t find Geranium, you might try Camellia. It’s a similar shade, just slightly lighter. If you are OK with something brighter, try Mandarin.

  3. You used to use Charlotte Tilman Light Wonder. so you replaced that with the Chanel foundation? I still like Light Wonder, but I am not wearing any makeup now due to the mask wearing.

    1. Hi Linda, I still think the Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder is a good product; I just like this one even better. 🙂

  4. Thanks for the video. It was fun to see a little more of your personality shine through! I wish I could use make-up again. I had a reaction to an eyeshadow years ago and now I find that anything with color pigments on my eyelids results in itching, which means I end up rubbing my eyes. Even mascara causes itching. It’s so frustrating. I tried all the hypoallergenic brands. I tried using antihistamines but didn’t really help. Plus I have dry eye, which results in more rubbing of the eyes. So, even if I do put on mascara for a special event, I end up with a mess by the end of the day. I’ve just had to accept au natural for my look.

    1. Donna, I experience the same probs with eye makeup as you. It’s so frustrating. I’ve had some luck with L’Oreal’s Paradise mascara. Otherwise, I just wear a good quality tinted moisturizer & lipstick to brighten up my face (even under a mask!).

  5. Very helpful to have the video and the product suggestions. I tried Chanel Les Beiges but found it didn’t offer enough coverage for me and the ultra-moist formula sometimes made my face feel sticky. I love your previous recommendation of Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder and the old standby, Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer. Your glowing complexion is perfect!

  6. Thanks for the video. My daily makeup routine is similar. My eyes are small and deep set and eye makeup is a challenge for me. I do like Lacome lash primer and Definicils mascara. I really like a pretty lipstick and look forward to being maskless someday. I enjoyed this video and look forward to more, especially eyes. In general, for most women of a certain age, simple looks better (my opinion).

  7. I really enjoyed your video, and I like your use of makeup for a natural look. I am definitely going to get some of those products you shared. Thank you!

  8. 5 I can do but eyeshadow, liner, contouring, bronzing etc are just too much. I actually think at my age less may be better. I am just trying for healthy looking more than anything. You can eat right, take great care with your skin but 78 is 78. LOL

  9. You really nailed it! The colors are perfect on you, and give you a lovely, youthful, natural glowing look. I have seen so many women of a certain age go with black mascara and brow fillers and red matte lips that are intended to offset the loss of color in the face that we experience with our accumulating years, but actually look too harsh and are aging. I love this video!

  10. Hi Susan, I’ve been meaning to write you for months! First I purchased the Chantecaille Waterproof Brow Definer on your recommendation, and I love it. Easy to use and looks very natural. Then I took the plunge and bought the CHANEL Les Beiges Water-Fresh Tint. It took two tries – the first was too light – oh, how I miss walking up to a make-up counter. It blends with just the right amount of coverage, color and texture (and it looks much darker in the container). I also love CHANEL Le Crayon Levres lip definer and I’ve found that on all of our video meetings a brighter lipstick is essential. Love your blog and please keep those recommendations coming – cheers!

  11. Susan, if I had never read your blog I would have more money in my bank account but fewer pretty clothes and good make-up like Brian’s.

I appreciate Eve’s comment, although I am only 77…..at a certain point it is not possible to try to look younger without looking ridiculous but it is liberating. I may never cut my hair again, no cut will lift my face so pulled back is easy and becoming.

  12. Love your video. I have the same small makeup mirror for travel and love it. I wish the magnification was slightly higher but the mirror is distortion free and the lighting is genius.

By the way, I really like the earrings you have on in the video. Can you share info about them?

  13. Susan, thank you for your recommendations and the video much easier to understand the how to with show how. All products are on order. I couldn’t get the Chanel foundation at Nordstrom.ca so opted for the lot from Holt Renfrew the only place the foundation was available.
One question, can you recommend an eyeliner. I have very sensitive eyes and something I’m using is irritating them so with the change in mascara I should also change the liner.

  14. Hi Susan, Thank you so much for you video. Thoroughly enjoyed it and appreciated the courage it took to make this video to share with us. I was wondering if you have any thoughts about having eyebrows tattooed especially in our senior years. I have very little eyebrows and as my eyesight changes with aging I have been entertaining the idea of having the procedure but there’s a bit of hestitantion so would love to hear your thoughts.
