Nordstrom Anniversary Sale: First Round Picks

My top Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Picks (first round). Details at une femme d'un certain age.

I’ve had a chance to peruse some of this year’s Nordstrom Anniversary Sale offerings, both in person and online. My approach is not to focus on what’s “New And Now,” but rather look for pieces that will have some staying power, and add long-term value to a wardrobe.

If you are a Nordstrom cardmember, you can now shop the Anniversary Sale during the Early Access window.

Here are my top “First Round Draft Picks.” I’ve also updated my SHOP page with some additional items, and will continue to update periodically as I get deeper into the sale.

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Picks (First Round)

Just a reminder, some pieces do sell out quickly, but may either be returned or restocked during the course of the sale. If you see something you like but it’s sold out in your preferred color or size, just bookmark it and keep checking back.

Wear It Now

Though the sale includes mostly Fall merchandise, I’ve spotted a few pieces that can slot right into your Summer wardrobe.

Sofft milandi sandal in red suede from Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

These budget-friendly wedge sandals look SO cute in person! If I hadn’t just purchased red sandals on our trip, I’d be all over this one. (That heel is only 2″ though it looks higher in this image.)

Cole Haan GrandPro sneaker, part of Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

These sneakers were one of the MVP’s in my most recent travel wardrobe. Three colors in this style are included in the sale!

Eileen Fisher band collar dress included in Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

An easy, breezy dress for hot summer days. Machine washable too!

Statement Jackets

Saw a lot of really nice jackets included in the sale!

Cotton raw edge tweed jacket, included in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.

Who doesn’t love a good-looking tweed jacket at a budget-friendly price? This style is also available in a Navy tweed, in Misses and Petites.

Lafayette 148 New York lambskin jacket. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

Spendy but stunning. This (very) lightweight lambskin jacket is a beautiful honey color. (Not quite as orange as it looks online.) The description says that it runs large, but my usual size Small was a good fit when I tried on in the store. Plus size option. It’s in my shopping cart, may have to pull the trigger…

Halogen faux leather moto jacket in Burgundy, one of my Nordstrom Anniversary Sale picks. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

There are a lot of moto jackets included in the sale. This one is faux leather, and that deep burgundy is versatile alternative to black. I like the clean look, not a lot of extraneous hardware, and what there is, is subtle.

J.Crew knit leopard print bomber jacket. Part of Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.

On the more budget-friendly end of the spectrum, this knit bomber jacket in leopard print is SO CUTE!! It didn’t work for me color-wise, but if you can wear cooler colors, give this a try.

Wardrobe Basics

While they may not be as flashy, these are the pieces that can be the backbone of a wardrobe, and prevent those “nothing to wear” days…

J.Crew Cameron high rise crop pants in navy. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

These trousers in a seasonless, washable fabric are offered in both black and navy. Flattering and comfortable, they’re a polished choice for travel in all but the warmest months.

Halogen v-neck cashmere sweater, included in the Nordstrom Anniversary sale.

It may be tough to think about sweaters at the moment, but a simple, v-neck cashmere sweater is always a great piece to have on hand once the weather cools down. This one is budget-friendly, and available in several colors. Plus-size option too!

Kut From The Kloth dark wash boyfriend jeans on sale. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

A dark-wash, straight-leg jean strikes the right balance between polished and casual. These are well under $100, and available in Plus.

Eileen Fisher jersey top in Clove. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

Here’s a nice lightweight layering top in a dark neutral that isn’t black! 😉 Misses here. Other colors available as well.

J.Crew Dover double-breasted blazer in navy. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

I tried this jacket in the yellow, but it wasn’t the right yellow for me. I was impressed with the fabric and fit though. In black or navy, this could be wardrobe workhorse. (And if it suits your coloring, the royal blue could be a nice accent piece.)

Aquatalia weatherproof suede ankle boot with buckle detail. Included in Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

A sleek, weatherproof ankle boot that will dress up or down. Also available in Taupe and Herb (dark sage green) suede.

Underneath It All…

Hanky Panky lace boyshorts in aqua blue on sale. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

Several colors of my favorite Hanky Panky “boyshorts” are included in the sale! These last for years if you wash on the delicate cycle in a lingerie bag and line dry.

Nordstrom delicate fabric wash for lingerie and silks. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

And I always pick up a bottle of the Delicates Fabric Wash during the sale. I use this for all of my lingerie and delicates, including silk tops.

Are there any specific items you’re looking for in the sale?

As a 40+ year Nordstrom card holder (going back to University days), I have seen the Anniversary sale evolve over time and learned my lessons – I focus on the shoes, handbags and sweaters. Too many items are “early fall” – short sleeves, thin fabrics, and, unfortunately, lower quality. Based on your previous recommendations, I ordered the Aquatalia boots (sage).
Side note: For the first time ever, I was elevated to something called “Ambassador” status this year (probably the purchase of my daughter’s wedding dress. MOB dress and going overboard at Christmas). So, yesterday, I had a choice of going into the local store early OR ordering on-line a day ahead. I went on-line and ordered for store pick-up – and received notice this morning that one item was already out-of-stock(in the store)! I will have to order on-line after all.

I don’t know how I ever got dressed without your site. My wardrobe has a little bit of everything and by looking at everything you show us I can always find something new that I can put together and not worn together before. Thank you, thank you.
    Enjoy the weekend.

Is it just me or is this year’s Anniversary Sale somewhat disappointing? I wait anxiously for this sale every year and usually find way more than I can afford. Not so much this year.

I found there were fewer selections for most brands, but saw more that I liked than last year. They seem to have focused a lot on their in-house brands, and those have a lot of selection with regard to sizes and colors.

totally disappointing. I did buy 6 pairs of shoes tho not all on sale.

Yes, those are great colors! I’ll be covering shoes and accessories a bit more in a later post.

Thanks for this post. The aqutalia boots would be a splurge for me. Are they that wonderful? Good for traveling and walking more than usual? I have black suede Sam Edelman Petty style, so am torn between black and the sage. Beautiful colors.

Hi Jeanne, I’ve had a few pairs of Aquatalia boots over the years, and find them incredibly comfortable for extended periods of walking. I almost always include a pair in my travel wardrobe. They are also water-resistant and hold up quite well.

I have gone to the Anniversary Sale for 35 years now on the “first day”. This year was bittersweet as it was the first without my mom since her passing, but it was the first with my new daughter-in-law. As a longtime Nordy girl, I tend to go for the long term staples and classics.
I was so excited about the Veronica Beard and Halogen jackets but very disappointed when I found they were already sold out. I have even had a few emails from Nordstrom apologizing that something I ordered online this morning is out of stock.
While I appreciate that Nordstrom rewards its customers who spend more, I am disappointed in them that many items are out of stock before the first day of the presale.

Big thumbs up for Aquatalia boots! They are very, very comfortable, well made, and can truly stand up to an Ohio winter while still looking classically stylish.

I agree re: Aquatalia boots/shoes as I have a few pairs in my wardrobe. So comfortable and classic looking too. The best prices are always on the company web site in late January. Up to 70% off!! Frankly I find the best prices for any product are the manufacturer’s web site. They have all the styles, colors, sizes. As much as I appreciate Nordstrom’s customer service I ‘d rather save my $$. I say if you need it now, pay full price but if you can wait check out the company sites. They often give coupons and nice discounts along with advance notice or ‘surprise’ sales. Of course their customer service and guarantees are great too. I am a hardened on line shopper and have even dropped Sephora in favor of cosmetic manufacturer’s web sites. I just use a few lines and know what I want so I save time as well.

Hi Susan! I have to say I found just about nothing to be tempted by. Have already ordered and will be returning the Aquatalia boots, only because my monitor doesn’t show colors well. I wanted a lighter boot and the taupe is quite dark. Comfortable and beautiful though. The Paul Green loafers were a real disappointment. My first ever with PG. They are a new line, called “Soft”. The sides have no structure so they kind of flop a little. Not supportive. Nice color though. Maybe for someone with wider feet.

I did find quite a few items for my husband this time around! And it made me think it would be great to have a Monsieur Travel Wear recommendations post. What shoes does he like? Trousers or jeans? Tees or shirts or polos?

Thanks and have a great weekend!

    • July 14, 2019 / 4:44 pm

Well, people with wider feet also need supportive shoes. So do people with narrow feet, and that is even harder to find nowadays!

Hi. Great idea to include things like the fabric wash. Do you launder your cashmere in it too or dry clean that? Any tips on laundering silk blouses? I would like to start doing that. Thank you!

Hi Linda, for my cashmere, I use Laundress Cashmere shampoo. http://bit.ly/2lb5Kew I use the Nordstrom Delicates wash for most of my silk tops and scarves.

I was very pleased with the selections this year. As usual, I focused solely on fall / winter items and found items I will wear for months in Ohio – plaid wrap scarf, plaid leggings, plaid sweater skirt, bold stripe longline cardigan, etc. I also bought a very nice John Hardy bracelet at a good sale price. I’m a happy Nordstrom shopper this morning.
