Pick of the week: fresh chinos

I’ve been on the hunt for a pair of classic chinos with a relaxed (but not TOO relaxed) fit, in just the right shade of tan.

Talbot's relaxed chinos in Sand Castle.

Goldilocks finds her relaxed chinos…

These from Talbot’s are Just Right! The fabric is lightweight and neither too stiff or droopy. The fit is exactly what I wanted, easy but not sloppy. This is the Sand Castle color, but there are several colors available in Misses, Petite, Plus, and Plus Petite sizes.

They wash well and look “neat casual” right out of the dryer. If you want a really crisp look, you can steam or iron.

Talbot’s is having 30% off promotion (select full-price styles) and these are included!

If you prefer a more fitted style, you might like these “Perfect” Chinos. Also available in multiple colors, Misses, Petite, Plus, and Plus Petite sizes.

Here are a few more good summer basics from Talbot’s (many included in the 30% off promotion, and most available in extended sizes):

  1. The relaxed chinos look like a fairly low rise which I’m not used to seeing. I recently bought some slouchy style jeans but they still had a higher rise on them. It will be interesting to see if we’re going in a lower rise direction. Btw, I think your link for the summer basics at Talbots is missing.

    1. They fit me as a mid-rise, which I prefer in a casual trouser. You should see a widget with images for the summer basics. If you click on an image it will take you to the product page.

        1. Thanks for letting me know. I’m seeing it display correctly. If you have an ad-blocker enabled, or are in Reader View, that may be preventing it from displaying.

  2. Hi Susan: may I ask what size you tried in the slightly slouchy chinos? Or did you order 2 sizes just in case?

      1. Susan thank you so much! It’s been so long since I’ve ordered from Talbot’s I didn’t have a clue what size to order (but I did suspect a 6 would be better for me than a 4). On another note: Donna Tartt strikes me as a gamine style (she’s only 5 ft tall I think) but seems to wear menswear (with quirky details!) very well. Where in the world do US women find mannish styled suits—in the boy’s department?? Haha! Any help would be appreciated!

  3. I’ve been looking for a pair of relaxed chinos (not too relaxed) also. Tried the J Crew Factory. Liked the fit but fabric is too heavy for hot Florida summer. I just ordered the Banana Republic slim cargo in Maverick Tan and a pair of Alex Mill Cotton Twill Boy pants in light khaki from Nordstrom. I may try Talbots if these don’t work. I’m hoping I love the Banana Republic slim cargos because I really liked the look of yours in the lighter color.

  4. IMO, Talbots is a casualty of the pandemic and its cascading retail bankruptcies. I want to like them, but since they stopped offering Talls in all but a handful of items, and since they stopped using (and apparently have no plans to use) plus-sized models to show plus-sized clothing (which I’m not — it’s the principle involved), I no longer shop there. I do like one of their rattan and leather totes, but a quick glance shows a single photo, with no photos of interior or even a description of what’s inside, nor any shots of a human being actually holding the bag. Small things like this just reinforce the perception of a company that’s struggling to stay alive.

  5. Old Navy has some terrific looking chinos! Available in lots of sizes and colors for a great price. Check out: High-Waisted OGC Chino Pants for Women.

  6. I like Talbot’s slim ankle denim. Perfect rise and fit for my 5’6″ frame. I bought pairs in yellow and white this spring. I also like Talbot’s Authentic Tee line. Very substantial fabric.
