What I love this week: a relaxed elegant outfit idea & more

Happy Saturday, and first day of fall! 🍂 I’ve been delighted that we’re actually experiencing some fall-like weather, so I’ve been dipping into sweaters earlier in the season than usual. Here’s a fall outfit idea that hits my “relaxed elegant” sweet spot…

A “relaxed elegant” outfit idea for fall

Susan B. wears an relaxed elegant fall outfit with a cashmere v-neck cardigan, wide leg trousers, and metallic sneakers.

There are a whole bunch of Friends & Family sales going on now. And this lovely cashmere cardigan from Vince is included in the markdowns. I’ve purchased a few Vince cashmere sweaters over the years and have always found the quality excellent, and worth the investment. This cardigan is also available in a pretty blue (good for Summers) and “Coastal” (dark navy).

I’m also completely smitten with these wide leg trousers! They’re a coated stretchy denim, and quite comfortable. They’re less shiny and a bit more luxe looking than faux leather, IMO. This dark brown is a great black pants alternative for those of us with a warmer color palette. (I’m wearing a 28 here, and think I might try one size down before I remove tags.) In addition to this “Chicory Coffee” color, they’re also available in Black.

The sneakers might not be the obvious shoe choice, but they add the whimsical, Gamine element I need to feel “grounded.”

Susan B. wears a gold link necklace, beige cashmere cardigan, tortoiseshell link bracelet, carries a dark brown leather tote.

I wear this necklace daily and am asked about it often. It’s a one-of-a-kind piece from Tarra Rosenbaum, who I previously featured here. Her jewelry is definitely in the “fine” category, but she does have some lovely charms that are more budget-friendly.

The bag is currently out of stock in this dark brown color, unfortunately. But there are a lot of other color choices still available. And DeMellier bags are 25% off in the Neiman Marcus Friends & Family sale!

Something yummy to try… 🎃

Trader Joe's mini ice cream cones pumpkin ginger flavor

Ok, so I am NOT one of those people who freaks out over pumpkin spice. I don’t like sweet coffee or other drinks. But if you have a Trader Joe’s near you, run, don’t walk and grab a box of these mini Pumpkin Ginger ice cream cones. SO good!!

  1. Happy autumn! I’m looking forward to sweater weather too. A fun but comfortable casual outfit. Love the tortoise shell bracelet. And i can see why people ask about the necklace. Bold but subtle and neutral enough for everyday.

  2. Is your watch a Cartier? I really like how you balance your jewelry-it doesn’t overwhelm your petite frame. I would like to have a watch that size and shape.

  3. Hi Susan. I love the look of the trousers on you, plus the color is gorgeous. You’ve got me thinking about expanding my trouser collection beyond the straight/slim leg.

  4. Happy Saturday, Susan! Thanks for sharing this post. I enjoy seeing a real person wearing real clothes, and I think about your blog often when I’m getting dressed for the day. It is always interesting how you combine things.
I like your special necklace and can see why you get a lot of compliments on it! Took a quick look at the maker’s web site. I am such a bargain shopper it’s not for me but it is fun to look and see all the beautiful things.
Your posts about travel wardrobes are making me feel like going somewhere soon. No plans but with fall colors — perhaps we need to find a weekend to get out more!
This week I bought a pair of Dansko waterproof boots (Daisie) in a really good brown at a local shoe store. They were a splurge for sure, but I am confident that I will wear them all fall/winter/spring. I also got a pair of less expensive navy pointy-toe Anne Klein flats from DSW that are just going to mix it up. i would LOVE to find a square-toed loafer in brown in my size (like an 11-12) and I’m not finding a darn thing locally and not sure if I am ready to mess around with shipping and returns to find the right pair. Hmph. Anyway, I made a good outfit with the new boots and it feels good to be dressed nicely!
Thanks for all the inspiration. Keep up the great work! Thanks also for pointing out all the sales for your readers!

  5. This is a very good outfit. Elegant, a bit casual but really more relaxed. And the bag is great with it. Funny to see the trousers being full length in you and cropped on the model.

PS I don’t like them cropped.

  6. I love this outfit. Every piece is perfect. What size are you wearing in the Vince cardigan, if I may ask (sometimes their sweaters run large)?

  7. Susan, love seeing the purse with what you are wearing. Ordered a few weeks ago in the tan, I am also your size so happy to see the size and not too large.

  8. I love fall! May I offer a suggestion for people like me who prefer a lower price but don’t like to sacrifice quality? Try looking at Quince. The quality I have found is excellent and the fabrics are top notch. Their cashmere is especially nice and I like it better than Neiman. Susan the look is so fun on your petite “in shape” figure! You are an inspiration!

  9. Dear Susan,
Thank you for sharing this fabulous outfit. I’ve been thinking about dark chocolate cords since your warm pallet travel wardrobe post but I really like these wide legged denims. A good dilemma to have!
    Best wishes,
