Sifting Through the Sales: Fashion, Beauty, Home

It seems like you can’t throw a rock without hitting a good sale right now. In addition to the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, a lot of retailers have their summer merchandise marked down. So I thought I’d circle back on some new as well as recently-reduced favorites.

J.Crew has marked down a bunch of their current season styles, including this popular linen eyelet shirt. I first styled this shirt as a “third piece” over a tank, but it also works well worn on its own. I’m wearing it here without a camisole underneath, and feel it covers sufficiently while still providing a nice bit of cooling airflow.

These “slim wide leg” jeans in Ecru have a relaxed, comfortable fit. This color is great for Springs and Autumns, and these can be worn well into fall. (Try pairing them with camel/beige for an elegant tonal look!) This style in white is also marked down, as well as several blue washes.

And you can save up to 40% off select cashmere styles. (Your November self will thank you…)

The ballet flats are from Paul Green, and included in the Nordstrom Anniversary sale. (More Paul Green shoes on sale.)

Luxurious silk pillowcase

I started using a silk pillowcase a few years ago, and never went back. They’re better for your skin and hair, and prevent both facial creases and bedhead. Mine was ready to be replaced, so I took advantage of the Anniversary Sale & ordered this one. This striped Champagne color is so luxe, but there are a bunch of other colors available.

Machine wash cold (I use a lingerie bag), line dry.

Our place air fryer from Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.

Air fryer (!!!)

Friends have been telling me for years that I should replace my ancient toaster oven with an air fryer, and now I have! I’ll be taking it for a test drive this weekend.

Soft & comfy pajamas

I bought a pair of these last year during the sale and LOVE them, so decided to get a backup set. They run true-to-size, and I take a small. I also ordered one of the shorty style for summer.

Do you have an air fryer? Any techniques or recipes you’d recommend?

Bon weekend!

  1. Susan—A couple questions. Did you find the pajama pants long where they should be shortened in order to not trip on them? I’m about the same height and size as you. What size did you order in the shorty set? I would like a review on those once you receive them. They look very short but also concerned if they ride up in the crotch area. I would love a post on sleepwear to accommodate a petite short person.

I ordered a few pairs of J Crew jeans for the first time in the spring and found they have large back pockets that sat low on the butt. Needless to say, I returned them. I’ve always heard size and placement of the back pockets are just as important as fit in finding a flattering pair of jeans. I don’t recall you mentioning that in any post. What’s your take? Is there a reason why you never show the back side of your outfits?

    Thank you . . .

    1. Hi Rose, I haven’t received the pajamas yet, but last year’s long pair were fine length-wise. They are full-length, but not so long that I trip on them. Regarding jeans pockets, I don’t worry about it too much. The only thing I avoid are back pockets that look proportionally too small. I rarely show the back side of an outfit because a) I’m taking my own photos and b) unless something is ill-fitting, or has really interesting detail in the back, I don’t think it matters that much. When we interact with other people, we’re usually face to face.

  2. I too am a huge fan of silk pillowcases. However, I wash mine with the sheets & toss it in the dryer. I suppose it would last longer if I was more careful with it, but I find mine last for a couple of years at least, before needing to be replaced.

  3. I didn’t realize Blissy pillowcases were part of the Nsale. Thanks for the tip; I just ordered another one. Silk pillowcases are not created equally. I’ve tried other manufacturers, but Blissy is the best I’ve tried. I gave one to my sister and my MIL last year, and they both rave about it.

  4. Just a note that you were right re the anniv sale. Everything I had on my list was sold out by the time I was eligible to shop — but by checking back a few times, I found every item came back into stock and I purchased (or reevaluated the insanity, LOL).

  5. I’m a “Spring” and I just love the way you incorporate brown and leopard print into your wardrobe. More ideas. please!

  6. I am a skeptic of kitchen gadgets, but to my surprise, I use my (gifted) air fryer all the time! I love to air fry veggies – Brussels Sprouts, quartered and tossed in a little olive oil and garlic salt. Air fry at 380 for 12 minutes. Toss with shredded Parmesan. Delicious! Also great for cooking fish fillets, chicken and frozen stuff you’d typically bake like French fries. Bonus: doesn’t heat up your kitchen! There are a number of good air fryer cookbooks out there too.

  7. Hi, Susan, I want to purchase some of the By Brian products but don’t see the sale price to which you refer. Can you help?

    1. I’m checking with Brian to see if the sale has ended or is still on. Will update once I hear back.

UPDATE: you should see the discount applied to the total order in your cart. If not, I’d suggest using the chat button to connect with Brian.
