Your Summer Weekend Capsule Wardrobe: Easy, Stylish & Travel-Ready

Whether you’re heading out of town or just planning a relaxed few days at home, having a go-to weekend capsule wardrobe can make summer dressing a breeze. With just a few versatile pieces, you can mix, match, and layer your way through everything from farmers’ market strolls to sunset dinners. I’ve pulled together a simple, stylish capsule that keeps packing (or getting dressed) effortless—and looking polished, too.

Last week I shared a summer weekend capsule in cool colors (Winter & Summer seasonal palettes), and many of you asked for a version in a warm color palette (Springs & Autumns). For this warm capsule, I chose ivory and brown as neutrals, with coral and warm red as color accents. (All of which are found in both the Spring and Autumn palettes.) This capsule would easily fit in a weekender bag or small suitcase.

I’ve chosen lightweight tops that can be layered as needed for warmth. Even in summer, I always travel with a light cardigan for cool evenings or aggressively air-conditioned interiors. As with the cool palette capsule, use this as a starting point and add whatever you need for the activities on your itinerary.

More options for your warm palette capsule

While you can currently find loads of blue and white striped shirts, other colors are a bit more scarce. For some budget-friendlier options to the brown striped shirt shown above, check out this one from Lucky in cotton poplin, as well as this one from Marine Layer. If stripes aren’t your thing, I really like the abstract leaf print on this Lands’ End shirt (runs large according to reviews, suggest sizing down).

For a longer style, take a look at this “Tomboy” shirt from Sézane. Or you could go with a coral stripe, like this one in no-iron linen from Chico’s (probably better for Springs than Autumns).

I love the look of the leather sandals in the set, though I haven’t tried them yet. If you prefer a more strappy style, take a look at these from Vince Camuto, and this style from Naot. I also like the look of these suede sandals from Naot. And of course, Birkenstocks are always a comfortable option. (If you prefer a less chunky look, these are nice.)

Just remember that if you’ll be doing a lot of walking, you’ll want to throroughly “road test” any footwear before you pack. For more travel-friendly footwear suggestions, check out this article: How to Choose the Best Shoes for Spring & Summer Travel.

  1. Thanks for these lovely pieces. I love that you feature items with some detailing that elevates them above plain. Looking at the cardigan and tee as I shift my colors to a warmer palette that suits my 68 year old skin.

  2. Beautiful pieces Susan! How DO you do it??! 😉 I’m torn between the Sezane shirt and the Boden cardigan but I think the Sezane will win–if you were to buy this shirt, would you take the 6?
Annie advised a Birkenstock sandal in leather (St Barts style) but I couldn’t find any in stock (sadly). I think I’ll stick to my Mephisto fisherman sandals that are tried and true. Thank you for these beautiful choices!
Are you having the same cool mornings and coastal fog that we are?? Hope all is well.

    1. Hi Sally, thanks and yes we’re still in the “marine layer” weather pattern especially mornings and evenings. I haven’t tried that Sézane shirt, but have found their tops generally run true-to-size. For a Dramatic Gamine, I’d definitely go with the shirt rather than the cardigan, if you have to choose.

  3. This is such a charming grouping, Susan. Exploring some pieces , which pop up in CAD for me makes for quite the leap…eg Land’s End Shirt with leaf print ,as another suggestion, went from $ 79 US to $125 CAD . Still, it’s the colours you put together…totally me! I will look for a skirt like the coral one…but don’t want a puffy waist on me. I did find a thin black stripe on cream pull on linen pant from Banana Republic for about 70% off which I have been wearing on repeat. That brown linen set is beautiful and maybe next year I will try out that idea. Good job!

  4. I’d love a post diving into warm v cool versions of certain colors. I struggle most with the corals and pinks. The coral in this post is clearly warm, but I can’t always see the difference.

  5. For summer travel in hot climates, I always take a couple of linen tee-shirts. They are easy to handwash in the bathroom sink after each wear (dry on a plastic hanger), so you can wear again without sweat stains and smells. They layer well too.

    1. Good idea, Anne. I will consider doing that on my next warm weather trip. Using Susan’s advice a couple of years ago, I purchased a few linen t- shirts in colours of tan, cream, olive and brown…all would go so well with this collection she has shown.

  6. I think I have everything I want for summer. Lots of golden yellow. Eagerly awaiting the Toosh blouse.

  7. I’d pack all but the shirt (not my style) BUT never leave home without a stripe, in a tee for me. Great capsule Susan, isn’t packing in summer such a breeze? xx

  8. I really like the clothing you have shown us today. The colors are a combination of light but lush. Thank you for your hard work. Have a nice day.
