Stylish winter warmer: a teddy coat
Have you watched “Only Murders in the Building” on Hulu yet? It’s part comedy, part murder mystery, set in a Manhattan co-op full of quirky characters.
hat | sweater | earrings | bag | pants | coat | boots
The story follows three mis-matched, podcast-addicted would-be sleuths who channel their obsession to solve the murder of one of the building’s least-loved residents. It’s very entertaining, and the actors play off each other so well. But watching the series, I became a little obsessed with Mabel’s (played by Selena Gomez) teddy and faux fur coats.
It’s not the first time I’ve been intrigued with teddy coats. While visiting Paris three years ago, I saw so many good ones. I tried one during that visit that almost came home with me, but I feared that it would be a short-lived trend, so dithered and walked away.
Teddy coats are either back, or never quite went away, but I’ve spotted quite a few good ones this season. There’s that dark pine green number above, which is currently 20% off with code HOLLYJOLLY.
This long coat has a single button closure, and is available in 3 colors. The Wine color is a nice alternative to black or brown. Sizes X-Small to XX-Large.
This zip-front jacket is offered in Misses, Petite, and Plus sizes, in both brown and navy.
A versatile color, and under $100.
A pretty and unexpected color, this double-breasted style is offered in Regular and Petite sizes, and is currently 25% off with code FLASH.
Here’s one that’s reversible…the opposite side is a puffer style. Sizes XX-Small to XX-Large. 20% off with code HOLLYJOLLY.
Another double-breasted style in a versatile camel color. Sizes XX-Small to XX-Large.
More women’s faux fur & teddy coats…

Year ago, probably at least 20 years ago, I bought what’s now called a Teddy coat from Coldwater Creek, on sale. Its sort of an oatmeal color so not as fun as some colors but extremely practical. I’ve worn it all these years and always had compliments on it. Its quite long and was the best coat to toss on before going to the gym. I could run errands afterwards and not look scruffy. Amazing that its trend on now.
I love them on others. I have a “coat” problem. I always crack up when I see the models bundled up against the winter weather with the bare ankles and the mules…no way!!!
You’re so right! Why wear a fuzzy coat if it’s warm outside and why wear short pants, bare ankles and ballet flats if it’s cold???.
Got nothing against the teddy coats though, the ones you have shown Susan are lovely.
But if you are a little on the large side….you could end up looking like …….a teddy!
I was literally browsing for teddy coats this morning (now that it’s finally cold in L.A.) when I read your post! Gonna check out the one at JCrew today.
These always look so cuddly! And I saw quite a lot of them in Paris, where I was until about a week ago.
Love Only Murders in the Building and teddy coats! Just a note, I have the Madewell one you link to, and it is more of a pine green. Definitely not dark teal! It is a warm and cozy coat! I, too, have a coat “problem” and only allowed myself to get the Madewell one if I gave two others away. Which I did!
I love teddy jackets but I live where temps are usually 60/40 in the Winter, usually warmer, so just can’t justify buying one but if I could, I’d love a camel one.
I say wear them if you like them, whether other people are wearing them or not.
I like the Style Hub! The organization makes it very easy to find ideas and past favorites, and it creates a great idea bank.
Thanks, Judy! Glad you find it helpful.
Love the Style Hub, went straight to outfits and page 45. It really shows how we can be restrained by our ability to see past a comfort zone.
All I can say is WOW! the butterfly emerged!
You are now glowing in your best colours and style.
Thanks, Angela!
Teddy coats are so cute and I would love to have one, but they are just too bulky and make me look like a linebacker. I love them on other people though!
Personally, I am not a fan of the ‘Teddy Coat’ look, they have always looked liked bathrobes to me.
I ABSOLUTELY love The Style Hub, can’t wait to really dive in, merci beaucoup, Susan!
Happy Holidays!
Rona
Glad you like it, Rona, thanks!
I recently found your site and love the addition of the Style Hub for easier access to the specific categories. I love that I can find great fashion ideas that I can actually wear and where to shop for the sales. So thank you for your hard work and excellent info!
Thanks PJ, I’m glad you like it!
Susan,
Did YOU succumb to the Teddy?!
I personally love this look in all of its variations, even tho I am short and busty and not thin, either…
I have not, though it’s been tempting. I think I’m pretty well set for coats this season.
I just read that ‘Only Murders in the Building’ has just begun filming season 2…
Susan, thank you for the suggestion, as I have just ordered a Teddy coat Xmas gift for my 30 year old niece and another young friend!
