Variation On A Theme

Jacket: Eileen Fisher from 2010.

Shirt: Brooks Brothers, here. (Still 50% off!) This has some very subtle vertical stripes that I just adore.
Pants: NYDJ, here.  To borrow a Faux Fuchsia-ism, I Luff Them 11/10.
Boots: Fluevog, here. (mine were purchased in 2009 in Vancouver, on a wonderful shopping afternoon with materfamilias.)
Earrings: Lauren by Ralph Lauren. Similar here, mine are silver.

Yes, it was actually cool enough in July to wear this.

  1. Lovely – and that is the jacket I am looking for! I live in Spain, and I am a petite (height-wise though not in width!), so it’s very hard to find a jacket with the right fit for me. I am going to Paris at the beginning of September and hope to be able to find something there. Any tips?

  2. I love the whole outfit, but what caught my eye first was the jeans. That’s a very flattering cut, just what I’ve been looking for. It’s interesting that they are NYDJ.

I bought some NYDJ’s recently. At first, they didn’t seem that different from my $20 jeans that I usually wear. But throughout the day, I noticed they kept their shape better and stayed more comfortable. And then someone asked me if I’d lost weight. O.k., maybe that “tummy control” they advertise is actually working. 🙂 And now they have colored jeans. I should probably go back to the store and get some more.

  3. Looking good, I’ve always been tempted by those jeans but have never even tried them on, now perhaps I will.
How did I miss that you and mater shopped together? I read both your blogs too…that would have been a fun meet up.

  4. This looks great on you! This is a very slimming silhouette. I love the color of the pants too. I bought a few Brooks Brothers shirts too (the tailored fit and the slim fit). I really love them. If you take them out of the dryer right away, they really don’t require ironing. I also bought a shirt from THE Shirt which was featured on Oprah at one point. It has extra buttons hidden at the bust so there is no gaping.

    Have a wonderful day!

    Leah

  5. This looks great on you! We are headed to California on Saturday and I’ll looking forward to escaping the Texas heat! And yes, I’m paying heed to your packing tips.

  6. OOOO…I love your variation! The pants look great on you and work with the other pieces so well! Love the color of the pants!

  7. That is a great look on you. I wish I could wear those jeans as I really like that color but I can’t so I will just admire you in yours!

  8. That is a winter outfit where I live! I just bought a new pair of shorts today, before the summer things are all gone from the stores. While shopping, I checked out the NYDJ selection. I have two pairs of their jeans, which I like because the rise is higher than most, & that looks better on my muffin-top. I will be in the market for new jeans in the fall, but what I DON’T like about NYDJ is their tendency to bedazzle the back pockets! I don’t have a big butt, but I still don’t want it to sparkle. The colored capris, which I might have liked, also had a sparkly detail at the hem. Cheapens the look, IMO.

  9. Btw, I quite like your crystal doorknob. We had those on my tiny little 1950s ranch style house when I was growing up. I wanted to buy a couple for my bathroom remodel, but was surprised to find they were $80 apiece! My old house doorknobs probably were a buck each.

  10. Mmm, I gotta check out the jeans. I got some shirts in Paris at Cotondouce – fantastic – but I need to take them to the cleaners to get the starch out.

they’d look great with jeans like that.

  11. Love the neckline on that shirt. But I’m a little worried about the “slim fit,” as I have a bit of a tummy, which you appear to lack. Any thoughts?

And I do like your colored jeans. Compared to the all-black outfit, I think the all-black outfit works better, but only very slightly.

    1. @sisty, I do have quite a tummy myself, but find these shirts skim nicely over my bust and torso. Brooks Brothers offers three fits; the one that works best for me is “fitted” cut which is in between the classic and tailored cuts.

    2. Thanks! You may not believe this, but I just went to check the labels in the two BB shirts I have, and lo and behold, they’re both the “fitted” style. You and I are similarly shaped, so it all makes sense now. I must be longer-waisted than you though, because the bottom hems of my shirts are shorter than yours. The length on you is much more flattering.

Those NYDJ jeans look so good on you, I’ll have to give them another shot.

  12. Thanks for posting the Brooks Brothers link. I’m wearing one of their shirts today and I love it and it looks great but I hated paying $55 for it until I saw the online site prices. We have a BB outlet store up here and the shirts are usually $45-$60 unless they’re in clearance at a less expensive price. Even the mens shirts @ Christmas are in that price range. I think living in the mountains has made me forget city pricing.
