I found these fab fall basics at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

A core of good basics is the foundation of any cohesive wardrobe. They’re the pieces we reach for most often, and make getting dressed easier. I’ve found some great wardrobe basics in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale this year. And now that it’s All Skate! (Public access), the sale is open to everyone.

Wardrobe basics from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

Denim

If denim is one of your wardrobe basics, you’ll find plenty of it in this sale. I was happy to see two of my favorite boyfriend and slim-leg styles included, and opted for darker washes in both.

Wardrobe basics on sale: Susan B wears a navy utility jacket, leopard print top, boyfriend jeans and nude slide sandals.

It’s hard to go wrong with a medium to dark wash jean. While lighter washes have been “in” the last few seasons, I think there’s always a place in the wardrobe for a dark wash pair or two. Relaxed and wide leg jeans have been on trend, but slim leg, boyfriend and bootcut styles are perennials, IMO.

I’ve been eyeing this leopard print top for some time, and decided to take advantage of the reduced price during the sale. I’m so glad I did! I’m wearing the XS here. This one is sleeveless; here’s the same style with sleeves. If leopard print isn’t your thing, here’s a polka dot version.

Casual jackets

Jackets are another of my wardrobe essentials. A jacket “finishes” and makes even a casual outfit look more polished.

I absolutely love this Caslon utility jacket! (Plus here.) I’m wearing size small and it’s roomy but not oversized. There’s a drawstring waist to give it some shape, functional pockets and snap closures.

It’s a perfect weight to transition into fall (or wear year-round in a mild climate). I liked this whole outfit so much I wore it out to dinner (outdoors) over the weekend. (Yes, it still gets cool here in the evenings.)

Sweaters

I’m always on the lookout for lightweight sweaters that will layer and travel well. I’m quite pleased with this one…

This ribbed merino wool sweater is the one I featured here, and it’s still available in all colors and most sizes. It runs large; I’m wearing the XXS. The wool is soft, not scratchy, and it has a nice drape. The jeans are a little long, so I’ve folded them under until I can get them hemmed.

More lightweight sweaters & cardigans…

I also have to give a shout out to these booties, which I knew I’d be keeping as soon as I tried them on.

boots

These are SO comfortable!!! They’re weatherproof too, so will be great for cool-season travel. They run true-to-size. They’re also available in a dark gray “Anthracite” color.

Just a reminder: if something you like is sold out in your preferred size or color, keep it on your wish list, and keep checking back. Items are often restocked during the sale, and you may get a second chance at your first choice.

Nordstrom offers free shipping and returns, and you can often order online and pick up in the store if you’re in a hurry. And don’t forget, prices on Anniversary Sale items go back up in August.

  1. Looks like you got some great deals. The color of jeans I wear changes with the season. Lighter washes in spring and summer and darker washes in fall and winter. Over all mid to lighter washes have more versatility in my wardrobe. Our falls arrive very late in the season. This is one reason I don’t jump on early for fall shopping-even though I like the fall concept of fashion. Here in the southeast it is often in the 80’s to high 70’s till the end October.

    1. Hi Robyn, thanks. And yes, I tend to go lighter with my denim washes during summer months too.

  2. I know there are great deals to be had at the Nordstrom sale but it’s difficult for me to be enthusiastic about fall and winter clothes right now as I savor the summer. I’m enjoying my tee shirt dresses and flip flops so much right now! I’ll probably be sorry come September

  3. Would you mind telling what size your navy jacket is? Mediums are sold out. I feel safe with small tops but wondered about the jacket?

      1. I just received the versatile navy Caslon utility jacket from Nordstrom’s (only 3 days for regular shipping!!). I ordered a small, using your link. I’m 5’1″ and I will need to cuff the sleeve one roll which looks fine. Thanks for finding this winner, Susan!
I think this every day: you work so hard for people you don’t personally know, but come across as a friend. I trust your advice and truly appreciate your efforts. Kudos!

  4. What beautiful outfits, Susan. I really see the value of wearing your colors, as everything is cohesive and complementary.

One note on the jacket (which looks amazing on you!) — the brass-toned snaps work so well for you and other warm-toned women, but on me, they were a glaring distraction. It’s a small thing, but keeping all my metals in the silver/pewter family helps them blend into the background.

    1. I learned a neat trick from another blog: If you don’t like the color of metal snaps or buttons, paint over them with nail polish in your preferred metallic shade.

  5. Love your jacket! I’ve been searching for a navy blue casual jacket for some time. I was tempted with this one, but I’m petite and like my jackets no longer than low hip. Sadly, this one seems to end about mid-thigh.

  6. As always, Susan, thank you so much for these. As an Autumn I’m now a bit sick of olive green and have decided that some navy blue can’t hurt. After finding several ‘vibrant autumn’ pieces I’ve decided I’d really like some neutrals. I realize it’s me going back to my comfort level but it’s also practicality (haha)! Neutrals travel so well after all. Speaking of travel (which I won’t be doing soon!) I realized that I could use some ‘more comfortable’ dark wash jeans. Stay well!

  7. Love that leopard blouse! I like the look of boyfriend jeans on other people, but I have a long torso with short legs (and knock knees), so they always make my legs look stubby.
