Chic Wedding Guest Outfit Ideas With Pants

Even if your day-to-day style leans casual, there are moments—weddings, milestone celebrations, elegant dinners—when something a little dressier is called for. But if dresses aren’t your thing, finding the right outfit can feel like a bit of a puzzle. The good news? You don’t have to sacrifice comfort or personal style to look polished. Today, I’m sharing some chic and elevated outfit ideas for special occasions that revolve around comfortable and versatile pants.

Wedding guest or special occasion outfits with pants

If you’re dress-averse like me, or perhaps traveling with a limited wardrobe, trying to “dial it up” for a wedding or other special occasion can be challenging. Many styles of pants can feel too casual or too corporate. Pants with a more fluid silhouette in silky feeling fabrics can be one way to thread that needle. For these outfits, I started with the Stratus pant from J.Crew, which have a luxe look, are currently marked down, and are available in several colors and size options. Look for more suggested styles at the end of the post.

Cool color palette

I put this look together with the traveler in mind. All of the pieces are lightweight and would pack well. And they’re simple enough that they could easily be styled more casually.

Warm color palette

A light neutral outfit like this one can be an elegant option. That blouse could also be worn open as a jacket over a light tank or shell.

More pants styles for dressier occasions

These crushed silk pants from Eileen Fisher could also work well in these looks. For more color options, check out this wide leg style in silk georgette. Palazzo pants are another style that can work well for dressed up looks; these from Quince are fun, and these from J.Jill are available in Misses, Petite, and Tall sizes. If you prefer something more tailored, this style from Talbot’s has a fun sequin side stripe detail.

ICYMI: Wedding Guest Dresses & Outfit Ideas

While dressing up for weddings or special occasions can be a bit more challenging if you don’t wear dresses, you can still create a chic and elegant look with pants. Simple styles in fabrics that look and feel luxe are a good starting point. Then add some sparkle and texture with accessories for a finishing touch.

  1. Hi Susan: I’ve been looking at the Stratus pants for weeks now. Have you tried them? J Crew’s website says that they run long and if you’re 5’5″ or shorter you should try the Petite. I’ve never worn Petite pants in J Crew. I suppose I should drive down to Corte Madera to see if I can try on a pair?

    1. Hi Sally, yes, they do run quite long. I have a pair in Petite and don’t wear heels, so will be getting them hemmed, probably about 1-1/2 to 2″. (Be advised, the J.Crew stores usually don’t carry Petite sizes.)

  2. Susan, thank you for both of the wedding posts. Especially because (at least for me) it’s easy to get caught up in a must-buy mood and grab something passable.
We can do better with your help! I am usually drawn to skirts and dresses, but when I saw your cool pants look above I thought, “That’s what Lauren Bacall would wear.”

  3. I’ve always felt a simple suit in a dressy fabric or unusual color can make for a beautiful but understated wedding guest outfit. Paired with some strappy sandals (or metallic flats) and elegant jewelry, and voila!

  4. I have a question about the new Eileen Fisher color “bluette” and I thought you had commented before but now I can’t find it: I know you have it listed here as “cool” and I am wondering if it sits on a line between warm and cool. I am an autumn and am drawn to that color (when I can find it, it is pretty unusual). Insight welcome!

    1. Hi Margaret, the few pieces I’ve seen in person in that color are definitely cool. Probably best for Summers, though a VERY Blue Autumn might be able to wear some of the pieces.

      1. Thank you! I am not a Blue Autumn at all so… guess I am just drawn to it and should buy a pillow. Ha!

  5. I used to have a fabulous trouser suit for such occasions. Alas, I wore it to shreds.

  6. Hi Susan – thank you for posting these! I attended an event last weekend and copied the first look almost exactly! It was perfect–comfortable, chic, and best of all, not a dress!
