A summery look with white jeans and espadrilles

Susan B. wears a striped tee, bandana as headband, white jeans and espadrilles.

Sometimes a new accessory or two is all it takes make your well-loved and often-worn pieces feel fresh. That was the case here. For this look, I started with these fun espadrilles, and worked up from there, adding white jeans, a striped tee and bandana.

I really love this whole outfit. First, it feels very South-of-France-circa-1962. There’s something about the aesthetic of that period that (late 1950’s-early 1960’s) that has always resonated with me (but the more casual styles of that era, not ones that require girdles and crinolines 😆). Plus, it’s comfortable but still feels very pulled-together. I wore it all day, including the bandana headband.

Bonus Gigi just because I love this photo. That half-underbite slays me every time.

I realized after the fact that this is a relatively budget-friendly outfit. Each of the items shown here is under $100 including the jeans (through today only.)

Last week I posted an outfit with a scarf/bandana, and many of you mentioned that it’s just too hot to wear scarves where you live. Because I think a scarf can add so much to an outfit, I experimented with some heat-friendly ways to wear them. Here’s a little Instagram reel I put together with a few ideas.

Fun with friends…

Last week’s Instagram Live with the Over 50 Style Team was focused on skincare. We all shared our some of our favorite products. Here’s the episode:

I don’t have a list of everyone’s products, but these are the ones I mentioned:

Colleen Rothschild Radiant Cleansing Balm | Vichy Purete Thermale 3-in-1 Cleanser |
Tata Harper Hydrating Floral Essence | Brian+MW Illuminate & Contour Eye Treatment |
Colleen Rothschild Triple Defense Sunscreen (SPF 40) | Elta-MD UV Clear (SPF 46)

We’ll be back again on Friday, 11am PT / 2pm ET, topic will be how to dress for your body shape. 👍

Aaaaand….

  1. I LOVE your casual style! Your jeans & tee combo is so classy, because of your attention to color, fit, proportion, simple accessories, and grooming.

    1. Hi Marie, the answer is a resounding…it depends. Because I’m petite, I like a bit of ankle showing, but I also see a lot of styles hemmed longer and worn with a bit of heel. It’s really a matter of personal preference and what suits your proportions.

      1. What size are you wearing and is it regular or petite? I am close to your size and can usually make a pretty accurate guess based on what size you are wearing, although I have had to make adjustments to reflect your smaller, fitter self.

  2. I love and look forward to the Igl features, as well as your blog! Undergarments is a topic I would enjoy some help with. At 70 and living in a beach climate, II love comfort but need some support

  3. Love that dang dog. Really like the scarf in the hair look. I’m going to try to replicate that. In one of your instagram post you have a pair of red espadrilles on. I’ve searched your shop my favorites but to no avail. Can you tell me where I can find those. BTW, you look fabulous and chic!

  4. Susan, this look sings of gamine style which along with these colours suits you perfectly!
I don’t have Instagram, so will you be putting the Red Leopard session on your blog for viewing later?
Will second Gigi’s comment (above) about undergarments as a future topic. I just started wearing Shapeez bras, both long & short, and love them.

  5. Hi Susan,
Love your summery look post! Could you please tell us about your sunglasses? They compliment your face and hair color so beautifully!

    1. Thanks so much, Stephanie. These are a few years old but I love them so much I keep updating the prescription lenses. They are from Oliver Peoples. Here’s one that’s a similar shape: https://bit.ly/3gvLAVN

      1. Thank you for the information on a similar style/shape of sunglasses! Susan, I truly enjoy your website!

  6. You look lovely. I notice you aren’t wearing much jewelry and the simplicity of this outfit reminds me of Jackie O’s casual look.

  7. Love the outfit (and your pup)! Is there a secret for keeping the scarf on your head? They ALWAYS slip off when I attempt to wear them that way. Merci beaucoup!

  8. You look casual, comfortable and yet elegant. Gigi is growing up nicely – so cute. I’ll look for the Red Leopard video on your website (don’t do Instagram). It addresses a question I have had for some time – how grey hair changes your colors and makeup. Thank you, Susan, for your excellent information.

  9. I bought the jeans you are wearing from J Crew and have to agree with you–they are so comfortable. I am pretty straight up and down with no curves (thicker waist). I do not wear Tees (being in my 70s they do not look good on me) but bought the tan seersucker and also the brown wide stripe (relaxed) button up and they look fabulous worn loose and untucked with the jeans. I have received numerous compliments. Cute strappy sandals, simple necklace, and bracelet and I am ready to go. Thanks for the recommendation. You can’t go wrong with these.
