What To Wear: Winter In Los Angeles

Yeah, those of you who live in the rest of the country can laugh, but it’s been COLD here the last few days. Cold for us, anyway.

My solution is to layer up (I’m actually wearing a thermal tee underneath my sweater!), and top it off with an indoor-outdoor coat. Almost no businesses or restaurants here offer coat check, so be prepared to either wear your coat through your meal, or drape it over the back of your chair. I’ve had this little cotton blend coat from Eileen Fisher for 3 (?) years, and it’s one I reach for often in the winter. (Similar).

It was sunny yesterday when I took these photos, but we’ve had several days of rain in the last couple of weeks, and more on the way. I love the brightness of red in winter months, but am most comfortable wearing it as an accessory. This wool J.Crew scarf is a few years old, and still one of my favorites. I find that black and red on its own can be a bit harsh, so I’ve broken it up with some medium blue jeans, metallic boots and taupe bag. The texture of the jacket also softens the black and lowers the contrast a little bit.

Brighten Your Outlook

Detail: style blogger Susan B. of une femme d'un certain age wears Everlane Day Boots in metallic finish.

Yes, these boots survived the Great Heel Purge Of 2019. Even though they’re a 2″ heel, they’re very stable and comfortable. Earlier in the week, I wore these on a day where I spent several hours on my feet, and had no problems at all.

What bright colors do you like to wear in the winter?

  1. In the photos, the taupe of the bag reads almost like the silver of the boots. I bet it’s even better in person, because they would be close but not matching, which is kind of a perfect balance.

    1. Thanks! Yes, the bag and boots are what I’d call “adjacent” colors. The boots are more metallic, but the undertone is very similar on the two pieces. I LOVE wearing these together!

  2. On my browser your scarf looks more coral than red………that would be my ‘red’………btw, I have subscribed to several fashion blogs by, shall we say, ‘mature’ women and yours is the only one I’ve stuck with…….your style most closely resembles mine and I enjoy finding new ways and products to express it! I look forward to it each day!

    1. Hi Cherrie, thanks so much! I’m so glad you enjoy the blog. The scarf color looks different depending on the light, to me it’s a coral-leaning red, with deeper red flowers.

  3. Not anywhere in your country, but I suppose our weather is the same as northern New England, modified by being in a large city. Burlington VT isn’t very far from here.

Red, definitely! But also a “bright” forest green, which is harder to find.

  4. This is so me, so totally my taste. From the metal booties to the jacket, jeans, scarf and hmm that lovely bag. I have been going over there bag on their website. But, well you know the story about ordering from the USA… Besides I need another bag like I need toothach.

  5. There’s something so cheerful about shocking pink, deep turquoise and icy blues. I love to wear cashmere turtlenecks and scarves (it is freezing where I live in Canada) in these colours to brighten up the usual winter colour suspects-black, gray and brown. Thank you, so much, for your blog about purging heels from the closet. I am your age, Susan, and never had a problem with medium heel heights. However, there’s been a change in how my feet are reacting over the last year or so.

    1. Funny, I’d never wear icy blue in the depths of winter; just looking at it makes me feel chilled through. I’d prefer warmer colours as an antidote. I do have a multicolour woven scarf (handcraft); mostly pink but a warmer salmon pink, shot through with green, black and white. But people have very different perceptions of colours – I love cool, Parisian tin-roof grey, but others might find it dismal.

Here in Montréal we are wading through a sea of slush and ice slicks; we are an island and it is very damp here as well as cold.

  6. I have a bright pink Uniqlo sweater on it’s way right now. I always choose muted colors but find myself craving color after our long, cold winter! Hope it fits! Buying online is a gamble.

  7. I’ve found that as my heels become lower, l need much shorter jackets and tops to create a flattering proportion. That has made shopping so much more challenging!

    1. It’s true that shoes are part of the “proportion equation.” So far I’ve been able to incorporate my lower heels without having to make too many wardrobe adjustments. Fingers crossed…

  8. I love your shoe choices and I think we wear the same size. What size do you wear in this boot? Thank you!

  9. You look great in this outfit! The jacket would be a great piece to have. I love the fit and fabric. Wish it came in another neutral besides black. I live in FL and we have been having “cold for us” weather also. The scarf looks coral to me too and I love it! I like to wear coral, yellow, and aqua for pops of color.

    1. Thanks, Rondi! This jacket gets a LOT of wear in the cooler months. I wish Eileen Fisher would bring it back in more colors.

  10. I have really enjoyed your blog…my favorite morning read. I have been admiring French Kande for a long time and have finally decided to purchase my first piece. They are all so pretty, do you have any suggestions for purchasing your first piece. Also, I’m super excited to get the special they are offering right now. Thank you for the information.

    1. Hi Diane, thanks so much! Regarding French Kande, it depends on your taste, but I usually suggest starting with a mid-length stone necklace. Those look great worn alone or layered with longer or shorter necklaces.

  11. I love that scarf. Perfect colors. I’m here in the area, too, and I have been wearing my Uggs all day in the house while my teeth chatter. I know they laugh at us wimps in the rest of the country!

  12. I love those boots. I bought that WHBM shell you have on with the leopard jacket a few posts ago, and it’s great! I really appreciate it, I’m short and pear-shaped have a really hard time finding pieces like this, especially in unforgiving white/ecru.

  13. Nice outfit! Are these the bronze boots and do they fit true to size? Also, are they very shiny or more a brushed metallic? In some photos on the website they seem really shiny and I prefer a brushed look.

  14. I will be traveling to Spain in late September till early October. I need help figuring out what to take for my wardrobe. Don’t want to look like a tourist, but look stylish. Thank you to anyone who can help.

  15. Hi Susan,
Have been seeing this bag in many of your posts and love its versatility. I think it is the same bag featured today and also some recent posts. Do you happen to remember what the color was called? I don’t think it is available but you never know where you might find something .
