Dressed-up casual: what I wore to a wedding

Oh, did I mention that the wedding was an afternoon event in the couple’s front yard? With margaritas and tacos following the ceremony. So I wanted to be comfortable and relaxed, but still look like I’d made an effort.

A casual wedding guest outfit

Susan B. wears a leopard print cardigan, gold jewelry, brown coated denim trousers, gold shoes.
EARRINGS | CARDIGAN | NECKLACE (SIMILAR) | BRACELETS (ALSO THESE) | TROUSERS | SHOES (SIMILAR)
My sizes: cardigan – Small, trousers – 27 (these run LARGE, size down)

I think these coated denim trousers have been one of my best purchases so far this year! They are quite comfortable and can dress up or down. I included them in my London travel capsule wardrobe last month, and wore them quite often. (After having worn them now for a few weeks, I’ve decided to get them shortened just a bit.)

The collared leopard cardigan adds structure without fussiness, and I’ve added a few pieces of gold jewelry for brightness and to balance out the shoes.

Dark boots or shoes would have been one way to go (perhaps the more obvious choice), but the metallic platform loafers add the “cheeky” element that my Gamine style personality needs. I’ve learned over time that I don’t feel like myself without it.

Some of my best footwear investments have been metallic boots, shoes, or sandals. They just seem to lift any outfit and make it feel more finished. And I tend to keep and wear them for years. (I’ve had this pair for a couple of years, hope to have them for many more.) Here are a few more styles in metallic finishes:

It was a lovely event, very relaxed and full of love and laughter. Just what a wedding should be!

I’ve been watching…

Slow Horses is back for Season 3 on Apple +
THEY’RE BACK!

Slough House fans…a new season of Slow Horses just landed on AppleTV ! I’ve watched the first two episodes, can’t wait to see more!

Annika season 2 on PBS

And if you have access to PBS Masterpiece on Prime, “Annika” is SUCH a good series! Nicola Walker is an amazing actress, and can convey so much with just a subtle shift of expression. Crime drama (but not gruesome), complicated family dynamics, some funny bits, and glimpses of Scotland make this one worth a watch.

What have you been reading or watching lately that you’d recommend?

  1. I love Slow Horses – Gary Oldman is brilliant. I wish I could recommend a good tv show, but there isn’t much worth watching, in my opinion. Just binge watched (again), Succession, and have started the second season of The Gilded Age. Good luck with your home make over – would love to see photos of the end result, if that isn’t being too intrusive.

  2. Slow Horses is soooo good! Glen Oldman is brilliant, and has said he has so much fun playing the slovenly, drunken, smoking, verbally abusive but don’t-you-dare-harm-my-agents Head of Slough House, he will do as many episodes as wanted. There are 8 books! All fun and suspenseful! Glad you are enjoying.

  3. Good morning Susan. (Your email lands in my in box early in the morning here in Ontario Canada)
Are your glasses new? They suit you well, luv the colour!
Also am obsessed with Slow Horses! Amazing cast and terrific writing.
Can’t wait for next week’s episode.

  4. Hi Susan! The front yard wedding with tacos and drinks sounds quite cool. Love love love what you wore. It’s me!
I’m reading Tom Lake right now having finished a book club selection and finished with Lessons in Chemistry. This LIC book took me two attempts to start. Don’t know why but I became annoyed with the central couple. So put it away then pulled it back up to read.
On TV I’m now enjoying Traces on Britbox. Was watching Vera on same -love her quirkiness. Finished all of this and Grantchrster on Prime (?) Masterpiece. I fell in love with several of the Grantchester characters!

    1. I thought that I might be the only reader who felt that the “quirkiness “ of the main character was over the top. I finished it but it was a bit of a slog. I enjoyed both SLOW HORSES and also Nicola Walker in UNFORGIVEN.

      1. Lee, Season 3 of Slow Horses is shaping up to better than the previous one. I see Gary Oldman’s character as a satire of the older, ‘world weary’ worker seen as disposable in many work places, not promoted because they lack the slickness and youth so beloved by current day managers. Don’t give up on it.

  5. Margaritas and tacos! How fun! And I too have enjoyed Annika. I am watching Season2 of The Gilded Age on HBO and loving it.

  6. Susan, just a note-if I click on an item from Nordstrom’s, I am just sent to their generic website but not to the specific piece as other sites do. Not sure if it’s on my end, yours or Nordstrom? Thought you might want to know.

    1. Hi Becky, is it one item in particular, or all of them? Or are you in Canada? (Nordstrom now has a distinct website for Canada, so the US links won’t work.)

  7. annika is a great series. Nicole Walker has many series on Prime that are just as great. I especially liked Forgotten, a series about people who have been murdered and then forgotten. they solve the cases.

  8. I love crime/police dramas and just watched all seasons of Bosch (on Prime). As an Angeleno, you’ll appreciate the beautiful way the city is portrayed. It’s a character unto itself.

  9. Love the outfit Susan–it’s definitely you! I wish I were an animal print fan but I don’t feel like me wearing them. I like the leopard on you though! Ditto the gold shoes–I tend to go for pewter. But I love the concept of your outfit! How fun to have an ‘informal’ type of wedding on the front lawn with tacos for the after wedding reception. The pants are now on my radar since you’ve gotten lots of wear out of them. I have some cheap Gap fake leather pants and will try them on today but am now thinking that the coated jeans is a more practical choice. Thank you so much for sharing! Congratulations and best wishes to the new couple.

  10. “Yosi, the Regretful Spy” is a very good drama about an Argentine Federal Agent who goes under cover in the Jewish community of Buenos Aires-16 episodes on Prime Video. “Fisk” on Netflix is a quirky Australian comedy series about a female lawyer; two season available.

    1. I absolutely agree that Fisk on Netflix is super fun and quirky. Sadly, I don’t get Prime Video so am apparently missing out on some good programs.

  11. I love the look of the Sezane Betty cardigan. The 19″ cropped length is too risky for me, however. No one wants to see my stomach. I like the Sezane esthetic. I was not happy with my Gasparde cardigans. Unfortunately, their knit blends pill terribly. I bet everyone had a blast at that wedding!

  12. Susan, you look fabulous in that outfit, so you! However, when you click on the coated pants link, they are really short and wide!! Is that because you are short so they look like normal length?
Talking of good tv series, it has not escaped my attention that most of the great series that people recommend are British.
You’re right about Nicola Walker (Unforgotten, Split, Last tango in Halifax, all brilliant). Try “Happy Valley” too, you won’t be disappointed, there are some good BBC Scottish shows too like Irvine Welch’s Crime, though Americans may have trouble with Scottish accents sometimes..
    Happy viewing !

  13. Hello Susan,
I love your outfit so chic and comfortable, such beautiful choices! We like all the same things! Nicola Walker is one of my favorite actresses; she was brilliant in the PBS series “Unforgotten” which you can also find on Amazon and every year it seems I have to rewatch her in “Last Tango In Halifax” which has such an amazing cast.
    Happy Hannukah !!

  14. I think your casual outfit for the wedding was ” so You”. A comfortable but fun wardrobe choice. So pleased that you too enjoy watching Nicola Walker, Susan. She certainly never disappoints in any of her roles. I have a family connection to the area of the Clyde where Annika is filmed. My favourite Scottish cousin lives 15 minutes west of Greenock ( where the fictitious Scottish MHU headquarters is filmed )in a lovely brookside cottage in Gourock , with wonderful views over the water. When I arrived for a third visit there last June ( via a Ponant Explorer ship which he saw sailing past to the docks) one thing he did to surprise me, since I told him about Annika, was to visit the modern glass fronted building where so much is filmed. It is actually an arts and culture building and we had coffee overlooking the Clyde where the team also sits to discuss plots. I subscribe to PBS since I watch many of their programmes, but also to be able to stream on my I- pad when tv just isn’t doing it for me. If I have missed recording a show, I can usually access it via streaming. I was so fortunate to have series 3 ( finale) of Happy Valley available on British Airways to watch flying home from London to Vancouver last year. Used up 6+ hours of my 9 hour flight home…making the long flight easier. Sarah Lancashire, the lead character, is another talented British actor.

  15. I love the series Annika. my husband and I are addicted to the Mhz streaming service and all the French mystery series they offer. Each takes place in a different part of France. oh, and Shetland is a series not to be missed.
