Dressed to Zoom: a colorful holiday look

Susan B wears a casual, colorful holiday outfit with red tweed jacket and layered necklaces. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

I thought it might be fun to share some simple but festive holiday outfit ideas with pieces that can be remixed to wear later.

This year, it’s looking like our holiday “parties” will be online. So I’ve shifted the focus for my holiday party outfits to above the waist…”tabletop dressing,” so to speak.

A casual, colorful holiday outfit

Detail: Susan B. wears a red tweed jacket, fleur de lis earrings and layered necklace from French Kande jewelry. Info at une femme d'un certain age.

My first tip to add the “Festive” to a Festive-not-Fussy look is to wear color near your face. It can be a jacket, a scarf, or a sweater. Be sure it’s one of your best colors; you’ll look more vibrant and cheerful (and you can use a light hand with your makeup).

I purchased this red knit tweed jacket at the beginning of the year, but haven’t worn it much yet. Not because I don’t love it, but…circumstances. I’d intended to include it as a color pop in travel wardrobes, hopefully 2021 will provide an opportunity!

Bold jewelry will show up better on camera than diminutive pieces, but you don’t have to go gargantuan. Statement earrings or necklaces and brooches are all great options. Have fun with it!

I’m wearing brass-toned Fleur de Lis earrings and a layered necklace from French Kande. The earrings are surprisingly light and comfortable enough to wear all day.

Here’s a little video I shared on Instagram:

What’s your favorite way to add a festive touch to holiday outfits?

  1. I love the jacket, although the price doesn’t love me. I think I found one recently that had a more Chanel feel at Zara (Zara Tindall, granddaughter to “the Queen’). I just knew it was going to be very expensive, but the prices were very reasonable!! I’ve never Zoomed before, it seems like a great way to stay in touch with friends & family to keep in touch; I just text & call. It will be just my husband & I this year & it’s going to be wonderful!! No big meal to prepare (as if I could now), we put the Christmas in the Master Bedroom (what better way to open presents on Christmas Morning!!) I’ll be wearing a soft cotton-cashmere blend jogger pant & sweatshirt in a turquoise heather; comfortable yet colorful!! Have a great weekend!!

  2. Your jacket is lovely and so flattering. I always look terrible on Zoom, do you have any tips for looking good? Camera angles, lighting, etc…

  3. Susan I have been very interested in your style and color makeover. I wasn’t sure I loved it at first but I guess it just took me a little while to adjust. When I turned 60 I developed a little belly and I think went overboard trying to hide it with longer flowy tops. Five years later I am trying to rethink that style as I am petite and don’t think it really suites me. I love the fact that you are willing to keep growing and being open to new ideas and new styles and colors. It really helps me to do the same. I now really love your styles and beautiful colors. Thank you!

    1. Thanks, Debbie! It’s taken a lot of trial and error. Changing up silhouettes is especially challenging as we have to re-learn what works with what. Just keep trying things, and you’ll know when you hit the “sweet spot.”

  4. I always think of white to accent a bold color like the red jacket, but the more neutral color you have on really suits you and has me rethinking my choices!

    1. Hi Nancy, thanks! The ivory shell works well for me because my coloring is warmer. Someone with cooler coloring may find white is a better choice.

  5. Your jacket reminds me of the black one you had before you had your colors “done”. I loved that black jacket. I’m sure you sent it to consignment and someone else is enjoying it now.

  6. What a beautiful and festive look for the holidays. I really don’t want to be uncomfortable since I’m just around the house but this look will let me be comfortable and still look great. I can’t afford the jacket right now but I do have a red lambs wool cardigan that fits the bill. You just gave me my Christmas Day look.

  7. You look absolutely stunnning, Susan. Gorgeous.
I love your IG video. You are poised and well spoken.
Amazing woman, yes you are….you inspire me.
Thank you for your spectacular blogs.

  8. Loved your video. It provided a practical real way to apply makeup for most days. Keep them coming—-please!!! I’m tired of the videos of so-called basic makeup that involve multiple layers of stuff on my face:)

  9. Zoom has a “touch up my appearance” setting in “Settings” that helps a lot to soften lines and make your color look better.
Amazon sells LED ring lights that are inexpensive and offer a light to put under your face that you can color adjust. I found one for under 20.00 that works great.

  10. Susan, love the jacket. Just put it in my bag. Is it a blue red or an orange red? Colors are so deceiving on line, hello Anthropologie! I am usually a size larger than you so ordering the 10.
Still love my navy jacket from Rome!

  11. What a terrific jacket! I saw a similar one in white (or cream maybe??) in a recent slide-show that you put up — it caught my eye then & does so again. BUT: what it’s doing is triggering my creative muse, who is sitting up saying, wow, that would be a snap to make! In my mind’s eye I see it in a raw silk bouclé in pure, clear scarlet. I’m a pretty accomplished seamstress but haven’t sewn clothing for myself in years — I didn’t need the clothes & got caught up in other interests & hobbies — but recently have felt that old urge to immerse myself in gorgeous fabrics & patterns again. It’s not even the finished clothing that attracts me (although that’s a nice benefit!) but the creative challenge of working with fine fabrics & the intricate details — like the fringe & welt pockets on this particular item. Thanks for the inspiration!

  12. Susan, your hair is perfection, and I just can’t stop being amazed by how your new color palette flatters you. You have inspired me to do the same when life circumstances provide a little more time for me to focus on updating my own wardrobe. Thank you for bringing a little sparkle to my days.
