Inspired By: Sporty Chic

Inspired by Lauren Hutton: a sporty chic look featuring J.Crew striped tee and Cameron pants. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

A couple of weeks ago I was driving home after an early evening photo shoot in Venice, and as I was stopped at an intersection, a woman crossed in front of me who looked very familiar. After a second or two, I realized it was Lauren Hutton.

Sporty Chic

She looked exactly as you’d expect: casual, sporty, polished. She was wearing slim black pants, light-colored sneakers in a classic style, and a light-colored sweater tied over the shoulders of what I think was a dark utility jacket. What I really noticed though was her backpack which seemed to be woven rattan.

The overall effect was a wonderful balance of ease and soignée. Everything was neat, nothing distressed (that I could tell) or oversized. She looked comfortable. All of the pieces were simple and straightforward, but the interesting bag personalized and elevated the look. The light was fading and she passed by too quickly for me to note any additional details.

And then earlier this week, I picked up a copy of the May Harper’s Bazaar on a whim, only to find…

Lauren Hutton style in May Harper's Bazaar. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

Yes, that’s the backpack (circled) she was wearing. Of course I’ve searched obsessively online ever since, but have not been able to find anything similar (that’s still available) to show you. But I’ve tracked down a few woven bag styles that aren’t too twee or fussy, and could also work with this look:

Street Level | Aranaz | Clare V | Vince Camuto | Francesca’s | Eric Javits

More utility jacket options:

Caslon | Levi’s | Everlane | J.Crew | Old Navy | Levi’s (Plus) | Madewell | LL Bean

Would you wear this look? How would you personalize it?

  1. Several different kinds of woven backpacks similar to the one shown are available on Etsy. Some are on sale, too.

  2. I have adored Lauren Hutton for decades ever since she refused to wear a cap to hide her tooth gap for photo shoots. She does have a nice, easy style about everything she does. Years ago I read an article about her travels to Africa and she was my inspiration to go. I have 2 pairs of similar laced shoes (black ones and tan ones) that I wear with casual pants. I think I am TOO matchy-matchy to wear the light laced shoes with black pants.

  3. I’ve always admired Lauren Hutton. I like her style, so casual yet chic. I have an olive colored utility jacket, it goes with just about any color of casual pants and top.

  4. I met Lauren Hutton a couple of years ago, backstage at the 92 ST Y in NYC. She’d done an onstage interview about her career, and I was a guest of the interviewer. She’s always been my fashion icon and one of the first women to wear sneakers. I love her unpretentious style and the way she mixes things from her travels, like the woven backpack. Here’s to fabulous women over 50!

  5. Lauren Hutton is my generation’s Kate Hepburn. Casual, chic, sporty, polished; exactly how I want my clothes to feel and look. Don’t think I’d opt for a rattan backpack; not my vibe. But everything else is right out of my closet. I hadn’t thought of picking a fashion icon, but I had to pick, I choose her.
