Lightweight, Non-Leather Handbags That Don’t Sacrifice Style

I’ve always loved a great handbag and still believe a chic bag can really level up an outfit. While many of my favorites are leather, weight has become more of a factor for me (particularly when I’m traveling) which has led me to explore stylish, functional handbags in lighter, non-leather materials. Since many of you have been asking for these options too, I’ve rounded up a few that combine style, function, and thoughtful design.

From everyday errands to travel days, these bags offer a lighter feel without sacrificing structure, function, or style.

A closer look at one lightweight style I’ve been reaching for lately, and why it works so well for both everyday wear and travel.

My sizes: Cardigan – Small, Trousers – Petite Medium

This time of year, I often switch to light colored bags, as I think they can really lift and add a nice pop to winter outfits. And the quilting here adds some textural interest. The one I’m carrying above is a new style from MZ Wallace, the Park satchel with an optional cross-body strap.

BAG
(crossbody strap is adjustable, removable)

I love the versatility of this style of bag. It can be worn several ways (in addition to the crossbody strap, those double short straps can be lengthened to wear on the shoulder). It’s really lightweight even with all of the interior and exterior organization. And there’s some structure in the bottom panel, so it holds the shape better and will sit up on a flat surface. While the body of the bag is lightweight fabric, the handles and trim are leather. Mine’s the small size, perfect for everyday and as a travel day bag. There’s also a Medium size, and both are available in 3 colors (Buff, Black, and Apple red).

Best for: Everyday • Travel days • Hands-free wear

Nylon & Fabric Bags

These lightweight, durable options are especially well suited to busy days and travel, with thoughtful organization and easy wear built in.

Best for: Everyday • Travel • When you need more capacity without bulk

Shoulder/Crossbody Bag – $298

If you prefer a more minimal look, this nylon bag has an adjustable strap, and interior and exterior pockets. Also available in Black.

“Origami” Tote – $145

I love the unique shape of this nylon bag! There’s an optional crossbody strap, interior and exterior pockets. This bag is available in several colors, and is well-reviewed.

(This soft Sage is good for Summers and Autumns, and is one of those “non-color colors” that goes with almost everything.)

Best for: Workdays • Errands • When you want a statement shape

Faux Leather & Suede

For a more polished look without the weight of traditional leather, these styles offer structure, texture, and modern shapes.

Many of you have recommended Mat & Nat bags over the years. I like this crescent shape, which is available in four colors.

Best for: Everyday • Casual polish • Vegan option

I think faux leather often works best in a woven or textured finish. This sharp little bag has a luxe look, and optional crossbody strap.

Several colors available.

(And if you like a larger, more relaxed option, check out this hobo bag!)

These longtime favorites have earned their status for good reason: they’re practical, versatile, and still hold up beautifully over time.

Le Pliage – $155

These foldable nylon totes are perennials for a reason! They’re versatile, lightweight, water-repellent and offered in dozens of colors.

To add some interior organization and structure, I like these lightweight purse inserts.

Best for: Travel • Commuting • Lightweight carry with flexibility

Longchamp le Pliage medium shoulder tote in Navy.
LL Bean Boat & Tote canvas bag (white/navy).

Boat and Tote – $39.95

This sturdy canvas tote is available in several sizes and colors, and in a zip-top style. You can customize with embroidery.

(Lands’ End offers a similar style with an exterior pocket that can also be customized.)

Best for: Casual days • Weekend errands • Customizable utility

If you’ve been looking for a handbag that feels easier on the shoulder without giving up polish, I hope this roundup gives you a few good options to consider. I’m always refining what earns a place in my wardrobe, and lightweight, well-designed bags have become a clear priority. Let me know if you’ve tried any of these, or if there’s a non-leather favorite you’d recommend next.

  1. thanks so much for this post! weight is always a factor for me when considering a bag, and it’s surprising how heavy an empty leather bag can be (I always check the specs on dimensions and weight). I love MZ Wallace, am a recent owner of a nice satchel-type crossbody and also a belt bag, which I haven’t used yet. key features for me are internal and external pockets for organization and easy access…..it’s surprising how many attractive bags have narrow openings……plus, the strap has to stay squarely on my shoulder so I’m not always having to hike it up!

  2. Ok I bought the Lo & Sons Nouvelle cross body from one of your prior links and I’ve been up and down on keeping it. I bought it for travel and when I wanted something that looked much nicer than my Lululemon bag that is almost the same, but a little smaller, and has the logio. The Nouvelle is a bit smaller than I was expecting, and that strap is pretty hideous. However, like you when traveling, I hate when my cross body starts to dig into my collarbone from weight. This post has convinced me there is a place for it and I’ll get a cool replacement strap for it! Also I’ll forever sing the praises of a Le Pliage. If it’s raining I whip one out immediately, and for travel it’s folded in my suitcase to use for shopping/beach/market at my destination. You can wash it in the washer!

  3. How lucky I am to wake up to this post! I spent the better part of yesterday looking for bags like these. Great minds think alike, thank you!

  4. I just ordered a Lo and Sons crossbody for a trip to Japan. It is chic and the materials are sustainable.

  5. I like several of these, but many of these bags are over sized for a petite person. I would like smaller, classy options.
Thanks for elevating us little people.

    1. Hi Steph, I’m 5’1″ and would recommend the bag I’m wearing, as well as the Aoyama bag, the Origami bag, and the small woven tote from JW Pei. Also, take a look at this smaller size of the suede tote (available in several colors/finishes): https://go.shopmy.us/p-38464038

  6. The shoulder strain of carrying leather bags is real. I love crossbody bags to keep my hands free. Love the look of the MZ Wallace Bags. Can you spot clean them? I wonder if they are rainproof. Always on the lookout for the perfect purse. Thanks for putting together all these suggestions.

    1. I have bought MZW for so many years and they are the only bag I use for travel. I have never tested them in a drenching rain, but they certainly have been water- proof in ordinary showers.

    2. I’ve successfully washed my MZ Wallace bag in the washing machine. I used the gentlest, hand wash, cycle and put it in with just a few other things for a small load with my regular detergent (All Free & Clear). No problems at all.

  7. Shoot, lost my comment. Again… I like the origami bag. Although I do have quite a few non leather bags, I think the leather ones are best. I do like my green transparent bag by Essentiel Antwerp.
My brown leather bag from Longchamps is really leightweight.
Oh…and do you still have that puffer tote you bought in Haarlem?

  8. Great post with such wonderful details about the bags, and your outfit which I love! Someone gave me a lovely cashmere turtle neck. However, it itches, so I have been hesitant to order any cashmere sweaters. Perhaps there are different grades, so may give this one a chance!

  9. Ooh I like many of these, thanks Susan. Especially the little Baggu, suede-ish bag and the canvas tote. Also…are you heading towards a new hairstyle?
    Best wishes xx

  10. Over the years, I’ve collected a number of handbags, but I always find myself reaching for my tried and true Lumi bag from The Sak. It’s lightweight, holds an amazing amount, and has an outside zippered compartment that’s perfect for having a phone handy but secure.

When I travel or shop, I throw this bag in my Le Pliage tote. These totes are so strong and lightweight. I’ve put many hard miles on my tote and it still looks great.

  11. I’ve worn and loved MZ Wallace bags for many years. Lately I’ve been in the mood for something different – it has to be lightweight and crossbody. I’ve been eyeing the Daniella Lahavi bags but it’s not easy to find a store that carries them. Any chance you’ve seen one? I value your opinion.
