The 10 best things I bought in 2023

I know I said I wasn’t going to do any year-end retrospective posts. But during a recent round of closet tidying and re-organizing, a few things jumped out at me that have really been earning their keep. So I thought I’d share…

My top 10 purchases for 2023

To wear…

Susan B. wears an off-white sweater jacket, green striped top, pearl & pendant necklace, light blue denim jeans, slingback shoes, carries an oval straw bag.

Sézane “Betty” cardigan

So nice, I bought it thrice. 😉 Seriously though, this collared cardigan is one of the hardest-working pieces in my wardrobe. I packed one for my recent trip to London, and it was one of my travel wardrobe MVP’s. I wear mine open as a light jacket in milder seasons, and buttoned as a top when it’s cooler.

The fabric is merino wool, and seems to be very good quality. I’ve noticed no pilling or snags on any of mine, despite a lot of wear. Merino wool is excellent for travel, as it adjusts to fluctuating temperatures, doesn’t crease, and doesn’t pick up or hold odors.

SCARF | CARDIGAN | JEANS (SIMILAR) | BOOTS (SIMILAR)

I’m wearing a Small, which on me is fitted through the shoulders and bust, falling straight to the high hip. If you want a more relaxed fit, I’d suggest sizing up. If you’re hesitant about ordering from a French brand, let me reassure you. Shipping is (really) fast and free on orders over $200, and returns are a snap (they include a UPS return label with each order) and free.

Seasonal color recommendations*:
Autumns: Ecru, Mottled Beige, Rosewood, Leopard, Cerulean Blue, Sage, Hazelnut
Springs: Ecru, Mottled Beige, Leopard, Coral Red
Summers: Lilac (currently sold out…keep an eye out for restocks)
Winters: Black, Black/Ecru, Navy Crochet, Ultra Violet, Bright Blue, Bottle Green, Magenta

*some colors can be hard to accurately discern online; I’m going by those I’ve seen up close or how they appear on my monitor

Susan B. wears a leopard print sweater jacket, brown knit pants, gold oxfords, and carries a dark brown DeMellier New York tote.

DeMellier “New York” midi bag

I always get compliments on this bag! It “punches above its weight” and people often think it’s a much higher-end designer bag. The Midi size is perfect for me, but if you’re taller or need to carry a lot, the full-size version might be better for you.

I can carry this bag in hand, or in the crook of my arm. There’s also an adjustable cross-body strap. There isn’t much interior organization, but it’s very lightweight for a structured leather bag.

Susan B. wears a print scarf, striped sweater, brown coated denim trousers, metallic sneakers.

My sizes: sweater – XS, pants – 27

Paige “Nellie” coated denim trousers

I had no idea when I first purchased these espresso brown trousers just how versatile they’d be, or how often I’d wear them! The coated denim fabric has a leather-like look, without being as rubbery or shiny as many faux leather styles. They are very comfortable, and dress up or down. (These were also MVP’s from my London travel capsule wardrobe.)

They’re marked down a bit now, and most sizes are still available. I found they run large, and went down a size. For those who have asked about care, I’ve had them dry-cleaned once and they came through looking brand new. (But mostly, I just spot clean them with a damp cloth, which mostly seems to be all they need.) Also available in Black here, limited sizes available.

Paul Green “Hadley” metallic sneakers

I’ve been a fan of Paul Green sneakers for some years now. They’re good-looking, sleek, comfortable, and supportive. And this slip-on style is great for travel! I wore these all over London in complete comfort. I love the subtle metallic finish which looks a bit more polished, and goes with just about everything.

They’re available in several colors, and run true to size. Yes, they’re a bit spendy; here’s another option with a similar look that’s more budget-friendly. (Not a slip-on style, but very comfortable and well-rated.)

Barrel-leg pants outfit: Susan B wears a cream merino sweater, leopard print belt, Ruti soft twill pants, gold sneakers.
SWEATER | BELT | PANTS | SNEAKERS (SIMILAR)
My sizes: sweater – XS, pants 1 (8)

Ruti slouchy twill pants

Even though I’m very much a “jeans girl,” I do like to switch things up sometimes. I loved these barrel-leg pants from the moment I tried them on, and have found them to be quite wearable. They are also available in a couple different shades of black.

I find Ruti pants can run a little snug in the waist, so I sized up to their 1 (US 8) for a more comfortable fit. They’re machine washable and can go in the dryer on low heat.

J.Crew leopard print belt

Adding a belt is a great way to make simple outfits look more finished. And this one in leopard print adds just the right amount of zhuzsh.

Susan B. wears a J.Crew sherpa teddy jacket and gold bracelet

I’m wearing Petite Small in the jacket.

J.Crew teddy sherpa jacket

This cute teddy jacket has turned out to be surprisingly practical. I’ve been wearing almost daily for dog walking, errand running, and outdoor patio sitting. I always get compliments on it too. Seems to run true-to-size, also available in Navy. (Save an extra 50% with code SHOPNOW.)

At home

BLUEAIR 311 automatic air purifier

I first purchased this air purifier last spring to help remove cooking odors and allergens, but have been glad to have it with all of the dust-generating work going on in the house now. It automatically senses particulates in the air and adjusts the fan accordingly. It’s quiet, and doesn’t take up a lot of space.

Diptyque “la drogerie” candle

This candle was another purchase intended to remove cooking odors, and wow, it really does the job (and smells lovely!). It doesn’t just perfume the air, but actually neutralizes any unwanted odors in the house.

Woven storage bins

When you have a small house, it can be easy for clutter to accumulate. I’ve been on a clutter-busting kick the last few months, and these water hyacinth bins (with or without lids) are an attractive way to corral bits and bobs you’d prefer kept out of sight. I have a few of these bins in varying sizes in just about every room of the house!

  1. Good Morning – This is a fun post. I am excited to read more responses. For me, some of my favorite purchases from 2023 were AYR The Sauce straight-leg jeans, J Crew vintage crewneck white t-shirts, and a pair of Golden Goose high tops. Some skin related favorites are the Fraxel I had done in November. I love the results and how my skin is responding. I also bought some Jones Road make-up (WTF foundation and a couple miracle balms). They are my go-to for everyday. My most used item is the color cards that came when I had my colors done online. I definately would have rather you done my colors, but I don’t live near you 🙁 I used a very reputable company and I am thrilled with the results. CheersKa

  2. Wonderful post! Loved the way you recommended colors for the sweater purchase. It’s the most important part of your selection (color). Learned that from you.

  3. Great post! I’m considering the cardigan, and wholeheartedly second your recommendations for an air purifier and the storage baskets. This is such helpful information — thank you!

  4. Great list! Has there ever been a year when a pair of Paul Green shoes does not make my Top Ten? I think it has been decades since that happened.

  5. Frequently I am drawn to the pants in your posts, but when I go to the link they are usually cropped and much too short in length for me. (But they are the perfect length on you!) I’m 5’5” and I don’t want pants with a 31″ inseam either because I don’t wear heels much anymore. I feel a bit like Goldilocks with this request – not too short, or too long, just right!
Do you have any suggestions for pants that are longer than lower calf?

  6. One of my favourite purchases of 2023 was my ECCO Yucatan sandals. They’re comfortable and supportive and still look like new after I walked many, many miles in them last summer and fall.

  7. I’ve purchased many things over the years from your recommendations and been very happy. I have to tell you I’ve had a very bad experience with Sezane and will never order from them again. I thought I would try the red coral cardigan although I am a winter thinking I could return it if it didn’t work. The color made me look physically ill so I tried everything possible to return it. There was no return label in an empty envelope that read “your free return label here”. I sent multiple emails to the address they supply explaining the problem and never got a reply. You cannot call them. Finally the 15 day return window ran out. I never did get a reply. I am stuck with a $170 sweater I cannot stand to wear. Beware ordering from this company.

    1. I’m so sorry to hear you’ve had a negative experience. I’m hoping it was a one-off, as I’ve always been impressed with their service.

      1. I absolutely love Sezane having been a customer of theirs for a few years and also own the Betty in three different colours. I do think that over the last few months there has been a hiccup in customer service online. I have decided to only buy in store when in Paris and Lille while it is sorted out.
Just for any other customer who may experience what Linda did, you are able to go into your order history and print your own return label without going through customer service. I hope this is of help and apologise for my poor written explanation in English.

  8. I found out, I didn’t get your emails with a new post anymore. So I subscribed again.

PS I love the ochre/yellow Ruti pants outfit best.
