The Friday Edit: a casual French vibe

A summer evening outside Cafe de Flore in Paris.

I’ve spent several hours over the last week clearing out some old photos on my phone and organizing the rest. Going through my travel photos makes me miss Paris all over again. (Le sigh.) I’m still hopeful that we’ll be able to visit later this year, fingers and toes crossed.

France at your doorstep…

My French Country Home Box - a subscription box with uniquely French gifts.

In the meantime, I’m looking forward to the next My French Country Home Box, scheduled for delivery in May. My French Country Home Box is a subscription gift box, filled with uniquely French items hand selected by Sharon Santoni. The concept for the May box is “time for moi-même“, and what better theme for a Mothers’ Day gift? The contents of the box are kept a surprise until after everyone has received theirs, but Sharon has announced two of the featured French brands included will be:

  • Imai jewelry, created by Julie Borgeaud. Handmade in Paris, and featuring stones, vintage rhinestones, pearls and 24-carat fine gold.
  • Mademoiselle Saint Germain, clean and cruelty-free beauty products, created by two pharmacists.

You can read all about the most recent box HERE. (One of my favorite items from the last box was Miss Maggie’s Kitchen Cookbook, which features French recipes and ideas for relaxed entertaining. I’m looking forward to using some of these when we can host at-home gatherings again!)

My French Country Home box is prepared and sent quarterly. Shipping is free (and duty-free). You can also subscribe annually to receive an extra gift in each box, and save. These boxes almost always sell out so don’t miss out!

Styling jeans and a graphic tee…

Remember that “poisson bleu” tee I featured a couple of weeks ago? I ordered one too, and here’s one of my favorite ways to style it so far:

Susan B wears an IRO boucle jacket, Madewell graphic tee, boyfriend jeans, Gucci loafers.

(Yes, the loafers are splurgy; here’s a similar look that’s more budget-friendly.)

Here are a few more options for fringe jackets…

I had fun putting this video together, and will be doing more of them soon!

Lipstick, for the win

Susan Blakey of une femme d'un certain age blog.

A few people have asked me what lipstick I’m wearing in the video above. It’s “Passego Puro” from Brian + MW. It’s one of my favorite colors to wear now, as it feels so fresh and Spring-y. I’ll be doing another LIVE Zoom tomorrow with Brian, this time on LIPS! (and cheeks). As I’m a lipstick junkie 😂 this is the one I’ve been looking forward to! Brian will be showing us how to prep, define and enhance our lips. (We won’t be wearing masks forever…)

These Zooms have been so fun and informative, and I hope you can join us tomorrow. We’ll be starting at 3pm ET/12pm PT. You can pre-register HERE, and submit any questions you have for Brian. Looking forward to seeing you there!

  1. I love your fringe jacket, I’ve been trying to find a more affordable one. Do you have any suggestions

    1. I cannot see a photo of the outfit on this post. I am not on Instagram, so could not view the video. If Instagram is the only way to view the photos, then I’ll be saying goodbye to your blog.

      1. Hi Mary, if you’re a regular reader, then you know that I almost always include photos of my outfits. It was my understanding that even those without an Instagram account could view the video. If that’s not the case, I’ve added a still photo.

  2. Hi Susan,
I love your posts. You inspired me and I had my colors redone stateside after you went to Red Leopard. I had been a bright spring, but was retyped as an autumn, bold and deep. I love my wardrobe. It clicked. My question is with that “poisson bleu” t shirt, is it a warm white for spring/autumns? Thank you.

  3. Susan, thank you for your wonderful posts. Always a fun way to start the day. I just bought a pretty mug that says “Paris,” and has all kinds of symbols of Paris: Montmartre, Sacre Coeur, of course the Eiffel Tower, a bistro table and chairs, shoes(!), L’arc de Triomphe, a metro sign, walking the dogs, a croissant, the Moulin Rouge, etc. My coffee tastes even better now. I guess we are all in need of a Paris trip!

  4. LOVE LOVE LOVE that blue cardigan/jacket. Gorgeous.

Wish I could make the Zoom tomorrow – I am hosting a two-day event on Zoom with masterclasses and workshops and concerts (oh my). Wish me luck and send up a prayer to the internet g-ds.

  5. Great tips and photos but the ads are so prolific and invasive that it appears you are promoting car batteries. Is there a way to turn them off?

    1. I feel like the ads aren’t particularly well targeted, too; I’m seeing one for Ace Hardware barbecue grills, and one for Castrol motor oil. Probably not the demographic that’s reading Susan’s blog!

      1. It may be that someone else at your IP address is looking at similar sites. My husband was researching rental cars on his tablet last week and I suddenly started seeing Hertz ads everywhere 😉

  6. Same here. Wh3n my husband looks at smokers or grills or musivpc equipment, I get those ads, he also gets my ads when I look at things for his birthday. No secrets on the internet,

I love this fringe jacket. It is just a perfect casual jacket. I have string jackets but this one is a little more on the simple side. Fun and sassy but not to out there. Works for me. I’m thinking green. Maybe it’s all that green in my woods now that’s making me want green in my wardrobe.

  7. Hi Susan,
Thanks for again demonstrating that comfortable can be stylish! A favor, please — Can you tell me about the tortoiseshell sunglasses that you’re wearing in this post? I’ve looked through your old blog posts and instagram shop and was unable to find anything about them. I love the shape and size — hoping they might fit my face as well as they fit yours. Thanks!

    1. Hi Ros, thanks! The sunglasses are a few years old. They were purchased from Jimmy Fairly in Paris, and I had my prescription lenses added at home. Here’s a really similar style that’s also for narrow faces: https://bit.ly/2QwWdyh

  8. Tres chic! Love that outfit—and the video, especially with the music! A great example of simple items creatively styled to suit the individual. Really does have that casual French vibe!

  9. That’s a fantastic look. I do love those loafers, though I doubt I’d be able to walk much in them. The jacket is fantastic, but I could not justify the price, although I’d love it in about five colors!
